Significant moment for the Sikh community in Victoria and across Australia, as the state Labor government has fulfilled its commitment to rename Berwick Spring Lake in honour of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh Guru. This historic renaming event took place on 9th November 2024 and was celebrated by members of the Victorian Sikh Gurduaras Council (VSGC) and the Sikh Interfaith Council of Victoria (SICV), with the support of the Department of Premier and Cabinet.
The official announcement was made by the Hon Ingrid Stitt, Minister for Multicultural Affairs, and Hon Sonya Kilkenny, Minister for Planning and Suburbs. Their remarks highlighted the government’s recognition of the Sikh community’s valuable contributions to the state and the lasting legacy of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, whose teachings of peace, equality, and unity have resonated globally for over five centuries.
The renaming of Berwick Spring Lake to Guru Nanak Lake is a fitting tribute to the first Sikh Guru, who founded Sikhism in the 15th century and whose principles of service, humility, and love for all of humanity continue to inspire millions worldwide. This gesture by the Victorian Government serves not only as an acknowledgment of the Sikh community’s role in the cultural fabric of Australia but also as a celebration of the diversity and inclusivity that define the state.
In a joint statement, the Sikh community expressed deep gratitude to Premier Jacinta Allan, Minister Ingrid Stitt, and Minister Sonya Kilkenny for their unwavering support in recognizing the profound impact of the Sikh faith and its teachings on Australian society. “This remarkable step taken by the Victorian Government is a testament to their commitment to honoring diverse communities and acknowledging their contributions to the state’s rich multicultural landscape,” said representatives from the VSGC and SICV.
The renaming ceremony coincides with the upcoming 555th anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s birth, which will be celebrated on November 15, 2024. The event was made even more special by the presence of community members, including leaders from various Sikh organizations, local sangat (community members), and distinguished guests, who gathered to mark this important milestone. Their collective participation underscored the unity, devotion, and gratitude of the Sikh community in Victoria.
