A father who tragically lost his life while attempting to rescue his children after their pram fell onto train tracks has been identified.

Anand Runwal, 40, and his two-year-old daughter were fatally injured at Carlton Train Station on Sunday afternoon when the pram fell onto the tracks, according to the media sources.

Mr. Runwal had relocated to Sydney from India with his wife, Poonam, and their two children in October last year. He was employed at an IT firm in North Sydney.

A fundraising effort has been launched for the family, who are grappling with immense grief and trauma in the aftermath of the incident.

“The father’s heroic actions have deeply shocked and saddened the local community,” the fundraiser stated. “The family, well-integrated into the local Indian community, is now enduring an unimaginable loss. The mother, aged 39, witnessed the tragic event and is struggling to cope with the sudden deaths of her husband and daughter.”

“In response to this tragic accident, we appeal to the community for assistance. The funds raised will directly support the family with funeral expenses, medical costs for their surviving daughter, and ongoing care for the grieving mother.”

“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the unexpected passing of Anand Runwal and his daughter,” wrote Sreyas Gopalakrishnan Thottarath. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to their family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. May their souls rest in peace.”

The devastating incident occurred when the pram carrying the toddlers rolled onto the tracks at Carlton train station in Sydney’s south around 12:25 pm on Sunday.

Fortunately, one of the children survived and was rescued by police officers who crawled beneath the train upon hearing cries for help.

Superintendent Paul Dunstan, Commander of St George Police Area Command, attributed the survival to fortunate circumstances. “The officers who went under the train reported that she was positioned between the tracks in a way that minimized harm,” he explained.

The surviving sister and her mother were taken to the hospital for assessment, though thankfully they sustained no physical injuries, and are now being supported by the local Indian community.

The NSW Premier, who resides near the station, acknowledged the father’s courageous attempt to save his children. “I hope with time, the community can find solace knowing that the father’s instinctive bravery led to his sacrifice,” he commented. “While it doesn’t diminish the tragedy, his act should be remembered.”

Initial findings suggest the family had used the lift to access the platform. “At some point after exiting the lift, they briefly lost control of the pram,” Superintendent Dunstan noted. “Whether due to a gust of wind or another factor, the pram began moving toward the train tracks.”

Eyewitnesses confirmed seeing the pram rolling towards the approaching train. Although the train was not scheduled to stop at Carlton, it was slowing down as it passed through the station.

Sydney Trains CEO Matt Longland stated, “The train was manned by experienced crew members, and the incident has been reported to the national regulator for investigation.”

Police have indicated that the incident is not deemed suspicious, with a report being prepared for the coroner’s review.
