The Australian cricketing pathway has delivered another milestone for the South Asian community, with three Indian-origin talents — Aryan Sharma from Cricket Victoria, Yash Deshmukh from Cricket NSW, and John James from Northern Districts CC (NSW) — earning selection in the Australia U19 Men’s squad for the upcoming home series against India.

Cricket Australia has announced a 15-player squad for the tour, which features three 50-over matches and two four-day encounters, to be held in Brisbane and Mackay from 21 September to 10 October. The squad was chosen by the youth selection panel in close consultation with state talent managers, reflecting months of scouting and performance evaluation.

For Aryan, Yash, and John, this is a chance to showcase their skills on the international stage while representing both Australia and their cultural roots. Their inclusion is not only a personal achievement but also a testament to the growing impact of South Asian Australians in elite sport.

Rising Stars with South Asian Roots

  • Aryan Sharma, a promising top-order batter from Carlton CC in Victoria, has impressed with his composure under pressure and technical strength against both pace and spin. His consistent performances in youth cricket earned him a place in the Victorian system, and now, the national U19 side.
  • Yash Deshmukh, representing Fairfield Liverpool CC in NSW, is a skilful right-arm pace bowler known for his ability to swing the ball and strike in crucial moments. His progress through the Cricket NSW pathways has been marked by strong showings in national championships and elite development programs.
  • John James, a gifted batting all-rounder from Northern Districts CC in Sydney, adds another layer of South Asian representation. Born in Kharagpur, India, near Kolkata, John moved to Australia at a young age and rose quickly through the NSW youth system. A Basil Sellers Sport Scholarship recipient and St Edward’s College student, he is recognised for his elegant stroke play, sharp cricketing instincts, and leadership qualities. His performances for NSW Metro and at national youth tournaments caught the selectors’ attention, paving his way into the U19 squad.

A Series with Big Stakes
The tour serves as an important step in Australia’s ICC U19 Men’s World Cup 2026 preparations. The two-year cycle has already included a tour of India, a specialised spin and batting camp in the subcontinent, and intensive training at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane.

The squad will be led by newly appointed Head Coach Tim Nielsen, former Australian national coach, whose international experience is expected to be invaluable for developing Australia’s next generation of cricketing stars.

Sonya Thompson, Cricket Australia’s Head of National Development, expressed her enthusiasm:

“This series against India provides a valuable opportunity for our young players to test themselves against a high-quality opponent. We’re also thrilled to welcome Tim Nielsen as Head Coach of the National U19 squad. His leadership will inspire our future stars to reach their full potential.”
