The High Commissioner of India to Australia hosted a special reception at the historic Old Parliament House in Canberra to celebrate the 78th anniversary of India’s Independence. The evening brought together leaders from government, business, academia, the diplomatic corps, and the Indian diaspora to honour India’s journey and its growing partnership with Australia.

The event was graced by Hon Dr Andrew Charlton, Cabinet Secretary & Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy, who attended as the Chief Guest. In his address, Dr Charlton highlighted the deepening ties between India and Australia, particularly in the fields of innovation, trade, and research, and commended the enduring people-to-people bonds that continue to strengthen the relationship.

Among the distinguished guests were Hon Michelle Rowland, Attorney General; Hon Tim Watts, Special Envoy for Indian Ocean Affairs; Hon Dan Tehan, Shadow Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction; and Hon Michael Pettersson, ACT Minister for Business, Arts and Creative Industries.

Launch of Clean Energy Report
A highlight of the evening was the launch of a landmark report on India–Australia cooperation in green hydrogen and clean energy, prepared by the Smart Energy Council in collaboration with the High Commission. The report underscores both nations’ shared commitment to sustainability and the transition to a cleaner energy future.

Showcasing Kashmir’s Heritage
The resilience and craftsmanship of the people of Kashmir were showcased through products from the region, including the iconic willow cricket bat, Kashmiri saffron, and traditional kahwa (tea), offering guests a glimpse of the region’s cultural and artisanal richness.

Cultural Performances
The celebrations also featured vibrant cultural performances, with the talented singer Jonah and the Swastik Dance Group from Sydney captivating the audience. Their performances paid tribute to the rich traditions and cultural diversity of India, adding colour and energy to the evening.

The reception not only celebrated India’s independence but also reinforced the shared values, growing cooperation, and strong community ties that continue to shape the India–Australia partnership.
