The Hindu Council of Australia, ACT Chapter, hosted its annual Deepavali celebrations at Parliament House in Canberra on 27 October 2025. The grand event drew more than six hundred guests, including parliamentarians, diplomats, community leaders and members of the Indian diaspora, in a vibrant evening celebrating light, unity and cultural harmony.

The celebration was officially launched by The Hon Milton Dick MP, Speaker of the House of Representatives, who praised the spirit of Deepavali as a festival that symbolises the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. The Hon Michelle Rowland MP, Minister for Communications, addressed the gathering and delivered the Prime Minister’s Deepavali message, acknowledging the festival’s significance in promoting peace, positivity and inclusivity within Australia’s multicultural landscape.

India’s High Commissioner to Australia, His Excellency Gopal Baglay, also addressed the gathering, extending greetings on behalf of the Indian government and highlighting the shared values of democracy, diversity and respect that strengthen the India–Australia relationship.

The evening saw participation from several distinguished parliamentarians, including The Hon Sussan Ley MP, Leader of the Opposition, Dr Andrew Charlton MP, The Hon Jason Wood MP, Hon Tim Watts MP and Mr Julian Leeser MP. Each speaker reflected on the importance of Deepavali as a time for reflection, renewal and community connection.

Dr Andrew Charlton MP, Cabinet Secretary and Chair of Parliamentary Groups for Friendship with India, recognised October as Hindu Heritage Month, emphasising the growing contributions and cultural presence of the Hindu community in Australia. He noted that festivals like Deepavali serve as bridges between cultures, enriching the social and cultural fabric of the nation.

The celebration featured a series of devotional and cultural performances, including Indian classical dance and instrumental music that captivated the audience. The traditional lamp lighting ceremony added a spiritual glow to the evening, symbolising knowledge, hope and new beginnings.

A special exhibition of South Indian dolls and cultural artefacts showcased the diversity of Deepavali traditions across India. The beautifully curated display brought to life stories from various regions, offering guests an immersive glimpse into the cultural richness and spiritual depth of the festival.

The event reflected the Hindu Council of Australia’s ongoing commitment to fostering understanding, harmony and inclusion through culture and faith. By bringing together leaders from across the political spectrum, the celebration underscored how Deepavali’s timeless message of light and unity continues to illuminate Australia’s multicultural story.
