The NSW Opposition has criticised the progress of the $3.1 billion M6 motorway project, claiming motorists in Southern Sydney are still waiting for clarity on when the project will be completed.

In a media statement, Shadow Minister for Roads Mark Coure said the project had effectively stalled for more than two years and called on the government to provide a clearer timeline.

“This project has been stuck in neutral for more than two years and commuters in Southern Sydney are the ones paying the price,” Mr Coure said.

The M6 motorway is designed to connect the M8 Motorway at St Peters to Kogarah Bay, creating a key transport link for Southern Sydney and aiming to ease congestion on local roads.

Mr Coure said motorists were promised improved infrastructure but were now facing ongoing delays and uncertainty.

“Southern Sydney motorists were promised a motorway; instead they’ve been handed delays, excuses and a construction site going nowhere,” he said.

He also questioned spending related to the project, claiming that more than $5 million had reportedly been spent on legal costs while progress on construction remained limited.

“$5 million could fix a lot of potholes across Sydney, but instead it has been wasted while this project sits idle,” he said.

According to the opposition, the government recently announced it would give the construction consortium an additional three months to deliver progress on the project following questions raised in Parliament.

Mr Coure said the government had not provided a confirmed completion timeline.

“If this is how Labor manages a $3 billion road project, it’s no wonder motorists have lost confidence in Labor’s ability to deliver,” he said.

The M6 motorway project is being delivered by the Transport for NSW under the Chris Minns Labor Government.

At the time of publication, the NSW Government had not publicly responded to the opposition’s latest criticism. This article will be updated if further comment becomes available.
