A significant moment of remembrance is set to take place in Sydney as the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Kapyong is commemorated with a memorial service honouring the bravery and sacrifice of Australian soldiers.

The event, organised by Strathfield Council and the Cumberland Sub-Branch RSL, will be held on Thursday, 24 April 2026 at Ismay Reserve, where the dedicated memorial site was established in 2024.
National Leadership to Join Commemoration
The service will be attended by Richard Marles, who will deliver an address alongside local leaders, members of the Korean community and Strathfield Citizens of the Year.

His presence reflects the national importance of the occasion and the enduring legacy of Australia’s role in the Korean War.
Honouring the Battle of Kapyong
The Battle of Kapyong, fought between 23 and 25 April 1951 in the Kapyong Valley near Gapyeong, remains one of the most significant engagements involving Australian forces during the Korean War.

Australian troops played a critical role in halting enemy advancement towards Seoul, helping prevent the occupation of the region. The battle came at a great cost, with 32 Australian soldiers losing their lives.
In recognition of their extraordinary service, the 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment was awarded a United States Presidential Citation, a rare and prestigious honour.
A Reflection of Shared History and Friendship
Strathfield Council Mayor Benjamin Cai highlighted the special connection between the region and South Korea, noting the council’s sister city relationship with Gapyeong.

This relationship adds deeper meaning to the service, symbolising not only remembrance but also the enduring friendship between Australia and South Korea.
Cumberland RSL President Matt Jones emphasised the importance of reflecting on the sacrifices made during the battle, recognising its role in shaping the freedoms enjoyed today.

A Moment to Remember and Reflect
The memorial service will bring together veterans, community members and leaders to honour those who served and to ensure their legacy continues to be remembered.
As the 75th anniversary is marked, the ceremony stands as a powerful reminder of courage, sacrifice and international solidarity – reinforcing the timeless message: Lest we forget.
