In a significant boost to India – Australia cultural ties, the Northern Territory Government has welcomed the launch of the first annual Indian film festival in Darwin and Alice Springs, marking a new chapter for the National Indian Film Festival of Australia.

With support from Tourism and Events NT and Screen Territory, the initiative establishes a strong and sustained presence for Indian cinema in one of Australia’s most distinctive regions.
A Strategic Cultural Expansion
The festival officially opens in Darwin on 30 April 2026, led by Jinson Charls, before travelling to Alice Springs for a second phase beginning on 11 June.

This expansion reflects a broader strategy to position the Northern Territory within the growing India–Australia screen and cultural exchange landscape, where cinema, tourism and diaspora engagement are increasingly interconnected.
Government Backing and Vision
Welcoming the festival, Marie-Clare Boothby described NIFFA as a unique platform celebrating connection, community and storytelling.
The multi-year support signals the Territory Government’s commitment to strengthening cultural engagement while promoting local talent and stories on a wider stage.
Building Bridges Through Cinema
Festival Director Anupam Sharma called the partnership a strong vote of confidence in the future of India–Australia collaboration.

Having previously filmed Bollywood projects in the Northern Territory, Sharma highlighted the significance of bringing Indian cinema to both the Top End and the Red Centre – regions known for their cultural depth and global appeal.
Iconic Venues and Expanding Footprint
The festival will open with a red carpet gala at the iconic Deckchair Cinema, followed by screenings at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory.
The program will then move to the Araluen Arts Centre, extending the festival’s reach across key cultural hubs in the Territory.
Support from the Consulate General of India and local Indian community associations further strengthens the initiative, ensuring strong community participation and engagement.
Beyond Film: Community and Industry Engagement
NIFFA’s Northern Territory chapter will go beyond film screenings, incorporating celebrity appearances, influencer engagement, community forums and workshops.
These initiatives aim to explore opportunities in tourism, screen production and cultural exchange, while deepening people-to-people connections between India and Australia.
An NT Cinema Committee will also be established to guide the festival’s future growth and activities in the region.
A New Cultural Chapter for the Territory
Darwin and Alice Springs offer a unique backdrop where conversations around identity, culture and belonging are deeply embedded in everyday life. By bringing Indian cinema into these landscapes, NIFFA is helping position the Territory as a dynamic part of the evolving India–Australia relationship.

As engagement between the two nations continues to grow across trade, education, migration and culture, NIFFA’s expansion signals a shift – where Indian storytelling is no longer limited to major cities, but embraced in some of Australia’s most iconic and culturally rich locations.
The Northern Territory chapter of NIFFA will run from 30 April to 14 June 2026, with program details available via the official festival website.
