Former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has officially been confirmed as the new federal president of the Liberal Party of Australia following the party’s federal council meeting held in Melbourne on Friday.

Abbott’s appointment marks a major return to senior party leadership at a time when the Liberal Party continues rebuilding after recent electoral setbacks and internal leadership changes. He succeeds former South Australian premier John Olsen in the influential organisational role.

The position of federal president oversees key constitutional and organisational matters within the Liberal Party and plays an important role in shaping internal governance, administration and party strategy. Although separate from parliamentary leadership, the role carries significant influence within the party structure.

Abbott secured the role after former foreign minister Alexander Downer withdrew from the contest and instead pursued a vice-presidential position within the organisation. His appointment received strong backing from senior figures within the party.

In recent public appearances, Abbott expressed support for Opposition Leader Angus Taylor and indicated his intention to assist the Coalition’s efforts to return to government. His nomination was reportedly put forward by Charlie Taylor, the Opposition Leader’s brother.

Abbott served as Australia’s 28th Prime Minister from 2013 to 2015 and remained a prominent conservative voice within national politics even after leaving parliament in 2019 following the loss of his seat of Warringah in Sydney.

His return to a senior organisational role has already generated debate within Liberal Party ranks, with supporters viewing the move as an opportunity to strengthen the party’s direction and reconnect with its traditional voter base. Others see the appointment as part of a broader effort to stabilise the party following recent political challenges.

Political observers say Abbott’s experience, national profile and long-standing influence within conservative politics are likely to shape the Liberal Party’s organisational direction as it prepares for future federal political contests.
