Australia’s Foreign Minister Senator Penny Wong has highlighted a new phase in Quad cooperation while confirming Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will soon visit Australia. Speaking during high-level meetings in New Delhi, Wong said Australia and India were continuing to deepen their strategic partnership across defence, trade, technology and regional security.

The announcement came after Wong met Prime Minister Modi during the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in India. Modi said both leaders discussed strengthening the Australia-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership while focusing on supply chain resilience, economic cooperation and Indo-Pacific stability.

Wong later confirmed Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had officially announced Modi’s upcoming Australia visit. She described the engagement as an important milestone in a relationship that had expanded significantly under both governments, adding that Canberra looked forward to welcoming the Indian leader later this year.

The Quad meeting brought together Australia, India, Japan and the United States to discuss regional security challenges and future cooperation. Leaders focused heavily on maritime security, infrastructure projects, critical minerals, humanitarian coordination and energy resilience across the Indo-Pacific region.

Wong said Australia and India’s relationship was increasingly built on “strategic trust” during a period of global uncertainty. She stressed that Australia remained a reliable partner for India as both countries worked together to support a peaceful, open and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

One of the major outcomes from the Quad talks included a new Energy Security Initiative along with the Quad Ports of the Future Partnership. The four countries also announced expanded maritime cooperation and regional infrastructure projects, including a planned pilot port initiative in Fiji.

Prime Minister Albanese has also continued recognising the contribution of Indian Australians in strengthening bilateral ties. During recent Australia-India Business Council celebrations in Canberra, Albanese praised the Indian diaspora for helping build businesses, jobs and cultural connections between both nations.

With PM Modi’s Australia visit now approaching, diplomatic momentum between Canberra and New Delhi appears stronger than ever. As cooperation continues expanding through the Quad and broader bilateral partnerships, both countries are positioning themselves as key players in shaping the future of the Indo-Pacific region.
