One of Sydney’s most iconic community landmarks is set for a major makeover, with The Hills Shire Council unveiling plans to transform the Aub Juleff Arena at Castle Hill Showground. Backed by more than $11.4 million in funding, the project aims to modernise the historic precinct while preserving its important role in community life.

For more than 136 years, Castle Hill Showground has served as a gathering place for residents, hosting agricultural shows, cultural celebrations, sporting events and community activities. The planned upgrade is designed to ensure the venue continues meeting the needs of future generations while enhancing its appeal as a multipurpose destination.
Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Michelle Byrne, described the project as a significant investment in the future of the region. With The Hills population forecast to grow by more than 71 per cent over the next 15 years, she said modern community infrastructure is essential to support the area’s rapidly expanding population.
At the heart of the redevelopment will be a renovated arena field, designed as a flexible grassed space capable of accommodating a wide range of events and activities. The upgraded arena will provide greater versatility for community groups, cultural organisations, sporting clubs and event organisers.
The project will also introduce new shade structures, spectator seating and a landscaped viewing mound featuring bleachers. These additions are expected to improve comfort for visitors while creating better viewing opportunities during events and community gatherings.

New plazas will provide welcoming spaces where families, friends and community members can meet, relax and socialise. Improved pedestrian pathways and enhanced accessibility features will also make the precinct easier to navigate for visitors of all ages and abilities.
A reconfigured internal road network and expanded parking facilities will help improve traffic flow, accessibility and safety throughout the site. Additional drainage and irrigation infrastructure will support the long-term quality and performance of the arena field.
Located adjacent to Hills Showground Metro Station, the revitalised venue is expected to become even more accessible for residents across Sydney’s north-west. Council believes the upgraded arena will strengthen community connections and create new opportunities for cultural, recreational and social activities.
The project is being jointly funded through the NSW Government’s Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants Program and The Hills Shire Council. The broader grants program is delivering $2 billion worth of infrastructure projects across Western Sydney, with $11.475 million specifically allocated to the Castle Hill Showground Arena Upgrade.
Future stages of the vision may include additional pavilions featuring function rooms, modern amenities, change facilities, bathrooms, a kitchen and kiosk facilities, subject to further funding. Residents are being encouraged to review the proposed plans and provide feedback as the project moves towards delivery.
As one of The Hills’ most recognised community spaces enters its next chapter, the transformation of Castle Hill Showground Arena promises to honour its rich history while creating a modern destination capable of serving a growing and diverse community for decades to come.
