Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has reaffirmed his support for multiculturalism, declaring that diversity remains one of modern Australia’s greatest strengths. Speaking during a visit to Melbourne’s south-east, the Prime Minister said every Australian deserves to feel safe, respected and valued, regardless of their language, faith or background.

The remarks came as Mr Albanese visited the Goodstart Early Learning Centre in Hampton Park to announce a $3.6 billion commitment aimed at securing a previously introduced 15 per cent pay rise for eligible early childhood educators. The package is designed to support workers in a sector that has long faced staffing shortages while helping families manage costs.

“Diversity is a strength of modern Australia. And no matter what language you speak, or faith you practice – every Australian deserves to feel safe, respected and valued,” the Prime Minister said while interacting with local residents in one of the country’s most culturally diverse regions.

Melbourne’s south-east is home to thriving Indian, Sri Lankan, Afghan and many other migrant communities, making it a reflection of the multicultural character that has shaped contemporary Australia. Communities across the area have contributed significantly to the nation’s economy, education sector and social fabric over several decades.

The childcare package announced by the Federal Government will provide eligible educators with wage increases worth up to $255 per week. New conditions attached to the funding are also intended to ensure providers maintain national safety standards and limit excessive fee increases for families.

Mr Albanese said early childhood educators play a vital role in supporting young Australians and helping children develop during their formative years. He argued that workers in the sector deserve fair wages and recognition for the important contribution they make to Australian society.

The Prime Minister’s message also highlighted the broader importance of multiculturalism in Australia’s identity. Successive waves of migration have transformed Australia into one of the world’s most diverse societies, with millions of Australians tracing their roots to countries across Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

For many migrant communities, including the Indian-Australian community, the message resonated strongly. Indian Australians have become one of the country’s fastest-growing and most influential communities, making significant contributions across business, healthcare, education, technology and public life.

Australia’s multicultural model has often been described as one of the nation’s greatest strengths, with cultural diversity helping to enrich communities and foster stronger international connections. Events such as Lunar New Year celebrations, Diwali, Eid and Christmas have become integral parts of the country’s social landscape.

As debates around migration and national identity continue to evolve, Mr Albanese’s message in Melbourne underscored a vision of Australia built on inclusion, respect and shared opportunity. For millions of Australians from diverse backgrounds, it served as a reminder that multiculturalism remains central to the nation’s story and to its future.
