The post, which focused on education reforms and proposed measures to address examination paper leaks, was briefly unavailable to users on Facebook before being reinstated. The temporary restriction drew widespread attention in India, prompting questions about how official government communications are managed on large digital platforms.

Following the incident, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) sought an explanation from Meta regarding the circumstances that led to the removal. Government officials requested details on the platform’s internal processes and the reasons behind the temporary restriction of the Prime Minister’s post.

Responding to the matter, Meta acknowledged that the content had been removed in error. The company said the issue resulted from an operational mistake rather than a deliberate decision and confirmed that the post had been restored once the error was identified. Meta also apologised for the incident and reaffirmed its commitment to improving the accuracy of its content moderation systems.

The apology was conveyed by Joel Kaplan, Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, who expressed regret over the incident during discussions with Indian authorities. According to reports, the company assured officials that it was reviewing its internal procedures to minimise the possibility of similar errors affecting official accounts in the future.

The issue also attracted the attention of a Parliamentary Standing Committee in India, with members seeking greater clarity from Meta about the platform’s moderation practices. The committee is understood to be examining how social media companies manage content from public institutions and elected leaders while ensuring transparency and accountability.

Meta has since indicated that it is strengthening internal safeguards for handling posts from high-profile public figures and government accounts. The company is reportedly reviewing operational protocols to reduce the likelihood of accidental removals and improve response times if similar issues occur in the future.

The incident has also reignited broader conversations about the challenges social media platforms face in balancing automated moderation systems with the need for accurate human oversight. As digital platforms continue to play an increasingly important role in public communication, governments and technology companies are working to improve transparency while maintaining community standards and platform integrity.

India remains one of Meta’s largest global markets, with hundreds of millions of users relying on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp for news, communication and public engagement. The country’s rapidly expanding digital ecosystem makes cooperation between technology companies and government agencies increasingly important in ensuring reliable access to official information.

While the incident generated considerable public interest, both Meta and Indian authorities have approached the matter through official channels. The post has since been restored, Meta has issued a formal apology, and discussions continue on improving operational processes. The episode highlights the growing importance of robust content moderation systems and constructive engagement between governments and technology companies as digital communication becomes central to public life.
