Desi Australia: Connecting the South Asian Community in Australia
Founded in 1997 as the entertainment portal desi.com.au, Desi Australia has now grown into a leading media publication, desiaustralia.com, dedicated to keeping the South Asian community in Australia connected and informed. Over the years, we have witnessed the rapid growth of our community from the 1990s to the 2000s, and our mission has remained clear: to bring together people of Indian origin and South Asian heritage by promoting communal harmony, social cohesion, and celebrating multiculturalism.
As a trusted media outlet, we understand the significance of inclusivity. Our focus on native and regional languages in campaigns has proven to be highly effective in making our audience feel heard and valued. This approach, already successful in countries like Canada and the UK, fosters a sense of belonging and strengthens societal bonds. We encourage organizations to incorporate languages like Hindi, Punjabi, and Tamil to reach a broader audience and create a more inclusive environment.
With the recent migration boom and growing South Asian population in Australia, Desi Australia has become a key bridge between community bodies, government agencies, and local organizations. Through our comprehensive coverage of current affairs, local events, and real-life stories, we give a platform to voices often overlooked by mainstream media.
Today, Desi Australia has evolved into a multi-platform media organization, with a strong emphasis on digital media, reaching over 300,000 community members each month. Our social media presence includes 130,000 followers, and we boast over 60,000 email subscribers for our weekly e-newsletters and monthly digital magazine. In 2022, our website attracted over 600,000 page views, solidifying our role as a trusted source for the South Asian community in Australia.
We are proud to have earned recognition for our efforts, including being winners at the 2021 NSW Premier’s Multicultural Communications Awards, as well as being a global finalist for the 2022 Micro Business of the Year at the India Australia Business & Community Alliance (IABCA).
