More than 25,000 people gathered at Riverway on Saturday, 15 August, as India Fest Townsville 2026 transformed the North Queensland city into a vibrant celebration of Indian culture, community, diversity and the spirit of giving.
Held around India’s Independence Day, the annual festival brought together people from across Townsville, North Queensland and beyond to experience the colour, traditions, food, music, dance and cultural richness of India in an open and welcoming Australian setting.
The Official Opening Ceremony was attended by Queensland Premier David Crisafulli MP, Townsville Mayor Cr Nick Dametto, Members of Parliament, Councillors, community leaders and representatives from across the region, highlighting the growing importance of India Fest within Queensland’s multicultural landscape.
For the Indian-Australian community, the festival offered an opportunity to proudly celebrate heritage, traditions and identity, while also passing those traditions on to younger generations growing up in Australia. For the wider community, it provided a chance to experience the extraordinary diversity of Indian culture while strengthening connections across Townsville.
The India Fest Townsville Organising Committee said the attendance of more than 25,000 people reflected the festival’s growing significance to the region.
“India Fest is much more than a cultural festival. It is a celebration of community,” the committee said.
“More than 25,000 people came through Riverway, and what makes us particularly proud is that they came from all backgrounds. People came together to enjoy the culture, food, performances and atmosphere, and to celebrate what makes our community so diverse.”
India Fest Townsville 2026 featured a packed cultural program showcasing both traditional and contemporary India. Audiences enjoyed classical and modern dance, live music, regional cultural presentations, workshops, demonstrations, food, market stalls and family entertainment.
The program reflected the diversity of India itself, highlighting different languages, regions, customs, music, dance traditions and cuisines.
Visitors were also encouraged to participate in Indian traditions through interactive activities including sari draping, mehndi, cooking demonstrations and yoga, creating an experience that went beyond simply watching performances.
The festival once again provided a major platform for local performers, community groups, cultural organisations, businesses and volunteers to showcase their talents and contribute to Townsville’s broader multicultural community.
An important feature of the 2026 festival was its strong focus on giving back to the local community.
India Fest continued its Thrift Shop initiative, with proceeds supporting Fuel for Schools, a local initiative assisting school communities and children in need.
The Thrift Shop allowed festival visitors to purchase pre-loved items while also contributing to a meaningful local cause.
“For us, community means more than coming together for one day,” the organising committee said.
“It means looking after each other and using the opportunities we have to make a positive difference. Our Thrift Shop is one small way India Fest can turn community participation into meaningful support for local people.”
This commitment to community service reflects the broader role India Fest has developed in Townsville, combining cultural celebration with practical support for the region.
Behind the success of the festival is a dedicated network of volunteers.
India Fest Townsville is a volunteer-led, not-for-profit community organisation, with hundreds of volunteers contributing their time, skills and energy throughout the year.
Their work spans event planning, logistics, cultural programming, marketing, sponsorship, hospitality, stall coordination and event-day operations.
The organising committee said the festival’s success belongs to the volunteers, community members, sponsors and supporters who continue to contribute year after year.
That community effort received significant recognition in 2025, when India Fest Townsville was named Best Event in Queensland at the Queensland Day Awards.
“Winning Best Event in Queensland was an incredible honour, but our biggest reward is seeing more than 25,000 people from different backgrounds celebrate together,” the committee said.
“That is what India Fest is really about – culture, connection, community and giving back.”
India Fest has grown significantly since its beginnings and has become one of North Queensland’s most prominent multicultural celebrations.
Its increasing popularity also provides opportunities for local businesses, food vendors, market stallholders, performers, community organisations and service providers, while attracting visitors to Riverway and contributing to the wider local economy.
The festival’s growing profile also reflects the important contribution Indian Australians are making to the social, cultural and economic life of regional Queensland.
