Sydney’s Saree Sisterhood came together for an evening of music, dance and camaraderie, celebrating the timeless songs of the legendary playback singer, Asha Bhonsle.
The elegance of black and white took centre stage at ProRegal Function Cente in Wentworthville as 80 women from the Saree Club gathered to celebrate one of India’s most iconic voices, Asha Bhonsle.
The evening, themed “Noire & Pearl” saw the women arrive in an array of black, white and monochrome sarees, complemented by carefully chosen accessories. The hall was transformed into a striking sea of elegance as the women embraced the theme with their own individual style.
But it was the music that truly brought the evening alive. Live singing by Daxa Chauhan took the audience on a musical journey through some of Asha Bhonsle’s much-loved songs. From the opening notes, the response was immediate. The women were soon on the dance floor, singing along and celebrating the music that has been part of generations of Indian lives.
The evening also showcased the talent within the Saree Club itself, with two special performances by members of the group. Both were carefully choreographed to Asha Bhonsle’s songs and were warmly received by the audience.
Adding an element of spontaneity was a fun impromptu dance game. Participants picked slips from a bowl, each carrying a different theme, and were challenged to dance to a song that matched their chosen topic. With no rehearsals and little time to prepare, the activity brought out plenty of creativity, laughter and infectious enthusiasm.
For the women, however, the evening was about more than music and entertainment. It was about friendship, connection and the joy of coming together as a community.
The Saree Club has created a space where women can celebrate their shared cultural heritage while also embracing friendship, creativity and life in multicultural Australia. The saree, in this setting, becomes more than traditional attire, it becomes a thread connecting women across generations, backgrounds and experiences.
The celebration of Asha Bhonsle was therefore a fitting reflection of the spirit of the sisterhood – vibrant, expressive, inclusive and unapologetically joyful. It was an evening filled with music, memories, friendship and sheer joy, a fitting celebration of a woman whose voice has transcended generations and whose songs continue to make us want to sing, dance and celebrate life.
