Australia Prepares for Its Biggest Federal Election in History

Australia’s largest-ever federal election is officially underway, with the Australian Electoral Commissioner Jeff Pope declaring the AEC ready to deliver a historic democratic event. With more voters, venues, and staff involved than ever before, the 2025 federal election is set to be a landmark moment in the nation’s electoral history.

“There are more voters on the roll than ever before, and we’ll have more voting venues – both in Australia and overseas – plus enhanced accessibility,” said Mr Pope. “We’re ready to go. You also need to be ready – check your enrolment and consider working with us.”

📊 Key Stats at a Glance

  • 710,000 new voters on the roll since 2022
  • 570 early voting centres
  • 7,000 polling places across the nation
  • 100+ overseas voting locations
  • 100,000 staff needed nationwide
  • 250,000 pencils and string lengths
  • 1.4 million security seals, 80,000 ballot boxes
  • 40,000 transport routes and 90,000 containers

🗳️ Enrolment & Voting

Enrolment closes at 8pm local time on Monday, 7 April 2025. Voting is compulsory for all Australians aged 18 and over. Enrolment can be completed or updated online in minutes at aec.gov.au. The electoral roll is already at a record 97.8% completeness, and this number is expected to rise further.

For those unable to attend polling places, postal voting applications are now open. With over 2.5 million expected to vote by post, early applications are encouraged—especially for regional voters.

💼 Election Jobs Available

The AEC is recruiting 100,000 paid temporary staff, with opportunities for both short- and long-term roles. From working at polling booths to managing logistics, roles are available across Australia, particularly in regional areas. It’s a great way to contribute to your community, gain valuable experience, and support local democracy.

🗳️ More Ways to Vote Than Ever

Australian voters have unparalleled access to voting methods including:

  • Early voting and election day voting
  • Interstate and overseas voting
  • Mobile voting teams (hospitals, aged care)
  • Postal voting
  • Phone voting for vision-impaired voters or those in remote locations (e.g. Antarctica)

🗣️ A Message from the Commissioner

“A federal election is Australia’s great festival of democracy. No matter your circumstances, there’s a voting option for you. Visit the AEC website, enrol or update your details, and make sure your voice is heard.”
