The Atlantic Council has confirmed Albanese as one of the honourees for this year’s awards, which will take place on 23 September 2026. The event will be held on the margins of the UN General Assembly and will bring together senior international leaders and figures from politics, business and other sectors.

Albanese will be recognised alongside President of Finland Alexander Stubb and Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1. The Atlantic Council’s 2026 program also identifies Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape as introducing Albanese.

The Global Citizen Awards are among the Atlantic Council’s flagship events and are designed to recognise individuals who have made significant contributions to global citizenship and efforts to improve the state of the world.

The ceremony’s timing will place it within one of the most important periods of international diplomacy, with world leaders gathering in New York for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The UN has scheduled its 2026 General Debate from 22 September, bringing national leaders together to discuss major international challenges.

For Albanese, the award comes as Australia continues to play an active role in international discussions spanning regional security, economic cooperation, climate action and engagement across the Indo-Pacific.

The Atlantic Council has described the awards as an opportunity to recognise global citizens while highlighting its broader mission of bringing countries and partners together to shape the future. The organisation’s previous ceremonies have attracted senior political leaders, business figures and internationally recognised personalities.

The 2026 ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, 23 September at 7pm Eastern Time, with the Atlantic Council also offering a virtual livestream for registered viewers.

Albanese’s selection places an Australian prime minister among a group of international figures being recognised at a major global gathering in New York, highlighting Australia’s continuing role in international affairs and diplomacy.

With the ceremony taking place during UN General Assembly week, the award will also provide an opportunity for Australia’s prime minister to engage with international leaders at a time when global cooperation and partnerships remain central to discussions at the United Nations.
