The Commonwealth has announced the appointment of Australian-British executive Tania Baumann and Indian diplomat Tanmaya Lal as its new Deputy Secretaries-General, strengthening the organisation’s leadership team ahead of a busy period for its 56 member nations. The appointments were confirmed by Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey.
Ambassador Tanmaya Lal has taken up the role of Deputy Secretary-General (Programmes), where he will oversee the Commonwealth Secretariat’s work across democratic resilience, economic development, environmental sustainability and social development initiatives. He officially assumed the position in March 2026.
A highly experienced Indian diplomat, Lal brings nearly 35 years of experience in bilateral, regional and multilateral affairs. Throughout his diplomatic career, he has worked across Asia, Africa and Europe while contributing to international negotiations, development partnerships and global governance initiatives.
Meanwhile, Tania Baumann has been appointed Deputy Secretary-General (Corporate), commencing her role on 21 May 2026. She will oversee the Commonwealth Secretariat’s corporate operations, including finance, governance, human resources, organisational strategy and institutional performance.
Baumann, a British and Australian citizen, brings more than 25 years of international leadership experience. Prior to joining the Commonwealth, she served as Chief Operating Officer of the World Energy Council, managing global operations across a network spanning 90 countries.
Her professional background also includes senior leadership positions with Nominet and the International Chamber of Commerce UK. Throughout her career, she has focused on strengthening governance, organisational effectiveness and collaboration between governments, businesses and community stakeholders.
The appointments come at an important time for the Commonwealth as member countries prepare for the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting later this year. The organisation says the new leadership team will help drive delivery of its Strategic Plan 2025–2030 and address emerging global challenges facing member nations.
For Australia and India, the appointments represent notable recognition of leadership talent from both countries within one of the world’s largest international organisations. Community leaders have welcomed the news, viewing it as a positive example of the growing contribution Australians and Indians continue to make on the global stage.
