India and Australia have further strengthened their maritime partnership following the 17th India–Australia Navy-to-Navy Staff Talks held in Sydney on 11 and 12 August 2026. Senior representatives from the Indian Navy and Royal Australian Navy used the two-day engagement to discuss ways of improving operational cooperation and expanding defence collaboration.

The discussions were co-chaired by Rear Admiral Sachin Reuben Sequeira, Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Foreign Cooperation and Intelligence), representing the Indian Navy, and Rear Admiral Christopher Smith, Commander Australian Fleet. Their meeting provided an opportunity to review existing naval cooperation and identify areas where the two forces can work more closely together.

A key focus was improving the ability of the two navies to operate effectively alongside one another. The talks examined operational interoperability, with both sides looking at ways to strengthen coordination during maritime activities and build greater familiarity between their personnel and operational systems.

The complexity of bilateral naval exercises was another major subject discussed during the Sydney engagement. The two countries have developed an increasingly active defence relationship, and the latest talks provided a platform to consider how future exercises can offer more demanding and meaningful opportunities for cooperation.

Capability development and professional training also featured prominently. The navies discussed opportunities to expand cooperation in these areas, reflecting a broader effort to strengthen expertise, share experience and improve the ability of both forces to respond effectively to maritime challenges across the Indo-Pacific.

The latest meeting forms part of a longer-running naval relationship between India and Australia. Navy-to-Navy Staff Talks provide an established mechanism for senior officials from both countries to guide and develop bilateral maritime cooperation, building on the broader strategic partnership between the two nations.

The Sydney discussions also come after a period of increased military interaction between India and Australia. The Indian Air Force recently participated in Exercise Pitch Black 26 in Australia, where personnel from participating countries conducted multinational air operations aimed at improving interoperability and professional cooperation.

The naval engagement reflects the expanding defence relationship between New Delhi and Canberra, which includes regular exercises, professional exchanges and cooperation across different areas of military capability. Maritime collaboration remains particularly important given the two countries’ shared interest in maintaining a stable, secure and open Indo-Pacific region.

For the Indian and Australian navies, the latest talks provide another opportunity to translate the broader strategic relationship into practical cooperation at sea. By focusing on operational coordination, more complex exercises, capability development and training, both sides are seeking to build a more capable and closely connected maritime partnership.

The 17th round of discussions therefore represents another step in the continuing development of India–Australia defence ties. With regular senior-level dialogue and growing interaction between their armed forces, the two countries are continuing to strengthen the maritime foundations of their wider strategic partnership in the Indo-Pacific.
