Victoria Police said Lavanya was found deceased at the scene. Two children who were inside the home were not physically injured.

Her 39-year-old husband, Srinivas Achanta, was arrested at the property and initially taken to hospital under police guard. Homicide Squad detectives later charged him with one count of murder.

Neighbours described the family as quiet and private, saying they had lived in the Vermont neighbourhood for around two years. The incident has left local residents shocked, with many expressing sadness over the tragedy affecting a young family.

Mr Achanta appeared briefly before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday and was remanded in custody. He is expected to return to court on 13 November as prosecutors prepare the case against him.

The charge remains an allegation and has not been proven. Mr Achanta is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until found guilty by a court.

A Loving Mother Remembered

A family tribute described Lavanya as a loving mother, cherished daughter, devoted family member, valued colleague and dear friend whose warmth and compassion had a positive impact on those around her.

Her death has left her loved ones facing profound grief, while her two children, aged 13 and seven, must now confront an unimaginable future without their mother’s presence, guidance and unconditional love.

The tragedy has deeply affected members of Melbourne’s Indian-Australian community, prompting messages of condolence and renewed calls for an end to violence against women.

At the centre of this heartbreaking case is the loss of a mother, daughter, relative, colleague and friend whose life will be remembered by those who loved her.

Desi Australia extends its deepest condolences to Lavanya’s children, family, friends and the wider community during this extraordinarily painful time.
