Indian airline captain Smit Machchhar has received widespread praise after surviving a serious cockpit attack aboard a Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, with his actions helping passengers and crew regain control of the aircraft during a dramatic mid-air emergency.

Machchhar was the captain of Flydubai flight FZ1073, which departed Dubai International Airport for Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv on September 30. During the flight, he was reportedly attacked and stabbed by the aircraft’s first officer, triggering a major emergency and raising fears of a possible hijacking or deliberate attempt to take control of the aircraft.

According to accounts reported by Israeli and international media, the aircraft experienced a sudden and substantial loss of altitude during the incident. Flight-tracking information indicated that the Boeing 737-8 dropped thousands of feet in a short period before an emergency situation was declared. Israeli authorities subsequently treated the situation as a potential hijacking and responded accordingly.

Despite suffering serious injuries, Machchhar is reported to have managed to open the cockpit door. That allowed passengers and crew members to enter the flight deck and help restrain the attacker. Other pilots travelling on the aircraft were also able to assist in securing the aircraft before it was diverted to Saudi Arabia.

One passenger, Israeli national Yaniv Hayoun, later described helping subdue the attacker after gaining access to the cockpit. Accounts indicate that the intervention of passengers, crew and additional qualified pilots was critical in stabilising the situation and preventing the aircraft from continuing in an uncontrolled descent.

The aircraft eventually landed safely at Tabuk Airport in north-western Saudi Arabia. Flydubai said the aircraft had been secured by on-duty Flydubai crew members travelling on the flight and confirmed that all passengers and crew were safe and accounted for. Replacement aircraft were subsequently deployed to transport passengers onwards to their intended destination.

Machchhar was taken to hospital in Tabuk for treatment. The Indian Embassy in Riyadh said the captain was receiving medical care and was reported to be in stable condition, while embassy officials and the Indian Consulate in Jeddah continued to monitor his situation and remain in contact with his family.

The captain’s actions have drawn particular attention in India and Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly praised Machchhar, describing his conduct as extraordinarily brave and saying that opening the cockpit door enabled passengers and crew to intervene. Netanyahu credited the captain and others on board with helping prevent a potentially catastrophic outcome.

Machchhar has extensive experience in commercial aviation. According to reports, he previously spent around 11 years flying with Indian carrier SpiceJet before joining Dubai-based Flydubai in 2022. Reports have also described him as having accumulated substantial commercial flying experience before the September 30 incident.

The identity and circumstances surrounding the first officer involved have been reported by several media organisations, but authorities have not publicly established a final motive. Israeli officials have characterised the incident in serious terms, while Flydubai has urged caution and said the reasons and motives remain unknown and subject to a formal investigation.

Flydubai confirmed that an altercation occurred in the flight deck but did not initially provide details about what caused it. The airline said it was working with the relevant authorities and asked against premature speculation while investigators establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The incident also involved an international response because the aircraft was travelling towards Israel and ultimately landed in Saudi Arabia. Israeli authorities scrambled fighter aircraft amid concerns that the emergency could involve a hijacking, while Saudi authorities dealt with the diverted aircraft and the injured pilots after the landing.

After the emergency landing, passengers were transported from Tabuk towards Tel Aviv on replacement aircraft. They later arrived at Ben Gurion Airport, bringing an end to an ordeal that had begun as a routine Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight but developed into a serious aviation emergency.

Investigations into the cockpit confrontation, the actions of the first officer, the emergency descent and the security circumstances surrounding the incident remain ongoing. While Machchhar has been publicly praised for his actions, the full sequence of events and the motive behind the attack have yet to be conclusively established by investigators.

For the Indian aviation community, Machchhar’s survival and reported actions have placed an Indian commercial pilot at the centre of international attention. His ability to respond despite sustaining serious injuries, alongside the intervention of passengers and crew, has been widely credited with helping bring the aircraft safely to the ground.
