In response to valuable feedback from local communities, the NSW Government has extended the application deadline for the Safe Places for Faith Communities Grants program to 9 January 2025. This extension underscores the Government’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety and security of places of worship and other spaces where faith communities gather regularly.

The Safe Places for Faith Communities Grants program, recently bolstered by an additional $5 million in funding, aims to enhance safety and resilience for faith-based groups across the state. As part of a broader $15 million initiative, the program addresses the evolving security needs of New South Wales’ diverse religious communities, ensuring they can continue to worship and connect without fear.

The program offers eligible applicants grants ranging from $5,000 to $250,000, which can be used to fund a range of safety measures and initiatives. These funds can be applied at faith-based centres, including places of worship, seminaries, religious museums, community centres, retreats, and sites of religious significance. The funding is designed to support both protective security measures and holistic initiatives that promote community wellbeing, resilience, and cohesion.

Joseph La Posta, Chief Executive of Multicultural NSW, highlighted the importance of the program, stating:

“These grants focus on ensuring faith communities feel safe and supported in their places of worship and gathering. This extended deadline provides more opportunities for faith groups to access critical resources to enhance safety and resilience.”

La Posta continued, emphasizing the dual approach of the initiative:

“By investing in both physical safety and community resilience, we’re reaffirming our commitment to creating an inclusive and secure environment for all faith communities in NSW. These grants are a vital step towards fostering a sense of belonging and peace for everyone.”

Faith groups across NSW are encouraged to apply for these grants, which represent a crucial resource in the effort to bolster security and strengthen community bonds.
