Melbourne is set to welcome one of Indian cinema’s most influential voices this August, as Bollywood legend Aamir Khan headlines the 16th Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) as its official Chief Guest. In a celebration of his extraordinary four-decade career, the festival will feature a specially curated retrospective of his most impactful works, culminating in the screening of his latest film, Sitaare Zameen Par, followed by an exclusive live conversation with the actor and his creative team.
Aamir Khan’s presence is expected to be a major highlight of the festival, which runs from 14 to 24 August 2025. Known not only for his stellar performances but also for his fearless commitment to socially conscious storytelling, Khan’s body of work has transformed Indian cinema and sparked vital national conversations on issues such as education, gender equality and disability. From Lagaan and Taare Zameen Par to Dangal and PK, his films have consistently blended commercial appeal with thoughtful narratives.

“Aamir Khan is not just a cinematic legend but someone whose work has always reflected sensitivity, depth, and a fearless commitment to storytelling. His presence will elevate the festival experience for audiences and filmmakers alike.”
— Festival Director Mitu Bhowmick Lange

Central to this year’s retrospective is Sitaare Zameen Par, a poignant story about a basketball coach tasked with community service, who finds renewed purpose mentoring a team of neurodivergent adults. The film has already been hailed for its heart and humanity, continuing Khan’s tradition of highlighting inclusion and empathy through cinema. On 18 August, following the film’s screening, Khan will take part in a live Q&A alongside director R. S. Prasanna and Aparna Purohit, CEO of Aamir Khan Films, giving audiences an intimate look into the making of the film and its message of inclusivity.
“I’m humbled and thrilled to be a part of IFFM. It’s a festival that truly celebrates the spirit of Indian cinema in all its diversity and richness. With Sitaare Zameen Par, we’ve tried to tell a story that embraces inclusivity and neurodivergence with sensitivity and heart. I’m excited to share this journey with Melbourne and shine a light on the stories that matter.”
— Aamir Khan

His appointment has been warmly welcomed by the Victorian government.
“We’re proud to welcome one of India’s most loved and respected actors—and celebrate his body of work. Aamir Khan is an icon for millions and a strong voice for the values of equality and inclusivity that we treasure here in Victoria.”
— Premier Jacinta Allan
Minister for Creative Industries Colin Brooks echoed this, describing IFFM as a “much-loved event on our cultural calendar” and applauding its role in showcasing international talent while fostering local conversations around storytelling and identity.

The festival’s program promises to be more than just a cinematic showcase. Alongside the retrospective, audiences can look forward to an array of screenings, industry panels, and cultural events across Melbourne. Highlights include an open-air screening of Dangal at the Princess Theatre lawn and a symposium on “Cinema and Social Change,” featuring both Australian and Indian filmmakers. There will also be masterclasses, panels on pan-Asian collaborations, and opportunities to engage directly with creators shaping the future of South Asian cinema.
