Sydney’s theatre lovers are in for a hilarious legal showdown as the Bondi Theatre Company prepares to stage My Fair Lawyer at Bondi Pavilion from 20 June. Written by Sydney solicitor and comedic playwright Tony Laumberg, the production promises sharp satire, unexpected twists, and plenty of laughs aimed squarely at the legal profession.

The play follows outspoken lawyer Henry Crowley and his wife Margaret, who have spent more than two decades living a quiet life in Sydney’s affluent St Ives. While Henry remains consumed by his high-profile legal career, Margaret battles loneliness with a growing fondness for alcohol.
Things spiral into chaos when Cheryl, a young law graduate from Cessnock, suddenly appears claiming to be Henry’s illegitimate daughter. Her unexpected arrival shakes the conservative household and throws the family into complete turmoil, especially after she demands a role at Henry’s law firm.

Adding another layer of comedy is the eccentric psychiatrist Dr Rahmish J Punjab, an Indian therapist secretly treating both Henry and Margaret. Known for his unconventional methods, the quirky shrink becomes central to the unfolding madness, delivering moments expected to resonate strongly with multicultural Australian audiences.
The production stars Martin Portus as Henry, Deirdre Campbell as Margaret, Jade Michailidis as Cheryl, and Gantanter Singh Gill as Dr Punjab. Directed by Richard Cotter and produced by David Spicer, the show marks Laumberg’s seventh stage production with the Bondi Theatre Company.

Laumberg said he enjoys putting Henry Crowley through endless personal disasters because the character’s struggles continue to deliver comedy gold. He also explores the humour created by the clash between traditional Australian attitudes and the ambitions of modern migrant communities.
The season will feature special Q&A sessions with both the cast and playwright, giving audiences a chance to dive deeper into why lawyers remain such popular targets for comedy. The production will run alongside Uked! The Play-Along Ukulele Musical during its Bondi Pavilion season.

Running from 20 to 28 June at Bondi Pavilion Theatre, My Fair Lawyer is shaping up as one of Sydney’s most entertaining independent theatre productions this winter. With satire, family drama, and multicultural humour blended together, the play promises a lively night out for theatregoers across the city.
