The new route links Adelaide directly with Shanghai, one of the world’s largest and most influential cities. The service is expected to deliver significant benefits across tourism, trade, education and investment, further strengthening ties with China, South Australia’s largest two-way trading partner.

China Eastern Airlines will initially operate three return services per week using its Airbus A350-900 aircraft. The wide-body aircraft can carry 286 passengers and around 15 tonnes of freight, creating new opportunities for exporters while providing travellers with more convenient access to China and the broader Asian region.

South Australian Minister for State Development and Minister for Defence and Space Industries Chris Picton welcomed the arrival of the inaugural flight, describing it as an important milestone for the state’s economy. He said improved international connectivity would support local businesses, attract visitors and create opportunities for South Australian exporters.

Minister for Trade and Investment Joe Szakacs also hailed the new service, saying stronger air links are essential to expanding trade, tourism and investment opportunities. He noted that the direct connection would help showcase South Australia’s premium products and world-class experiences to one of the state’s most important international markets.

Adelaide Airport Managing Director Brenton Cox said the new route represented a major step forward for the airport’s international growth strategy. He expressed optimism that strong passenger demand could eventually see the service become a permanent year-round connection between Adelaide and Shanghai.

China Eastern Airlines Oceania General Manager Bruce Cheng said the airline was proud to launch the historic route and strengthen long-standing ties between Australia and China. He noted that the new service would make travel easier for business travellers, tourists, students and families while opening additional opportunities for cooperation between the two countries.

Tourism leaders believe the direct flights will provide a significant boost to South Australia’s visitor economy, encouraging more international travellers to experience Adelaide and regional destinations. Universities and educational institutions are also expected to benefit from improved access for international students and researchers.

The service is equally important for exporters, with the additional freight capacity providing faster access to Chinese markets for premium South Australian products, including seafood, wine, beef and fresh produce. Business groups have welcomed the development as another sign of the state’s growing engagement with the Asia-Pacific region.

As Adelaide continues to expand its international reach, the arrival of the first direct Shanghai flight represents more than just a new air route. It symbolises stronger economic, cultural and people-to-people connections and highlights South Australia’s ambition to position itself as a globally connected gateway to Australia.
