The landmark store was inaugurated on 12 September 2026 by BIBA India Managing Director Siddharth Bindra, alongside City of Casey Deputy Mayor Cr Anthony Walter and Melbourne-based founders Abhishek and Meetali Jain.

The opening establishes BIBA’s first dedicated retail presence in Australia, bringing the brand’s distinctive combination of Indian craftsmanship, vibrant colours and contemporary design directly to local shoppers.

With a legacy spanning more than three decades, BIBA has become one of India’s most recognised women’s ethnic-wear brands. Founded by Meena Bindra in 1988, the company began as a home-based clothing venture before developing into an established national fashion label.

The name BIBA comes from a Punjabi word meaning “pretty woman,” reflecting the brand’s focus on celebrating women through clothing that brings traditional Indian design together with modern style.

Its collections include suit sets, kurtas, lehengas, dresses, jewellery, handbags, girls’ clothing and coordinating separates. The range caters to everyday, professional, festive and wedding occasions, offering customers different ways to incorporate Indian fashion into contemporary lifestyles.

A proud milestone for BIBA Melbourne

For founders Abhishek and Meetali Jain, opening the first BIBA store in Australia represents both a major business achievement and the beginning of a wider journey for the brand in the Australian market.

“We are incredibly proud to bring BIBA to Australia and to open the first store here in Melbourne. This is more than the launch of a fashion store. It is the beginning of a new chapter for Indian fashion retail in Australia,” Abhishek and Meetali Jain said.

“We look forward to making BIBA accessible to both the Indian community and the wider Australian customer who appreciates Indian fashion, colour and design.”

The store provides Australian customers with the opportunity to experience BIBA’s collections in person, allowing them to explore the fabrics, colours, craftsmanship and sizing without having to rely exclusively on online purchases or shopping during overseas visits.

For Australia’s Indian and South Asian communities, the physical store also offers greater access to clothing that reflects cultural heritage while remaining suitable for life in Australia.

Australia an important new market

Speaking at the opening, BIBA India Managing Director Siddharth Bindra described Australia as an exciting market for the company’s international growth.

“Australia represents an exciting new market for BIBA. We see a strong opportunity to connect our brand and our design philosophy with both the Indian diaspora and the broader Australian audience,” Mr Bindra said.

“Opening our first store here is an important milestone in BIBA’s journey, and Melbourne is a natural starting point for that journey.”

Mr Bindra joined the family business in 1997 and played an important role in transforming BIBA from a home-grown enterprise into a widely recognised fashion brand.

BIBA’s official company history describes its design philosophy as a combination of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary elegance, with collections inspired by India’s vibrant fabrics and intricate artistry.

Greater visibility for Indian fashion

The opening carries significance beyond the arrival of one fashion retailer. It reflects the growing visibility of Indian brands within Australia’s mainstream shopping environment.

Indian fashion has traditionally been accessed in Australia through independent boutiques, specialist cultural shopping districts, online stores or purchases made while travelling overseas. BIBA’s presence inside a major Westfield shopping centre places an established Indian label alongside prominent Australian and international retailers.

This gives Indian fashion greater exposure while allowing shoppers from different cultural backgrounds to discover its variety and contemporary appeal.

BIBA’s collections also demonstrate that Indian fashion is not limited to weddings or major cultural celebrations. Its range includes clothing for work, casual occasions and everyday use, as well as more elaborate pieces for festivals and formal events.

The store may therefore appeal not only to members of the Indian diaspora searching for familiar designs, but also to customers attracted to Indian colour, textiles, craftsmanship and versatile silhouettes.

A growing destination for occasion shopping

Located on Level 2 near Target, the new BIBA store adds to Westfield Fountain Gate’s expanding selection of culturally diverse retailers.

With Indian fashion and jewellery businesses establishing a presence at the centre, Fountain Gate is developing into a destination where customers can access important elements of the Indian wedding and festive shopping experience under one roof.

The opening also highlights a wider change taking place within Australian retail. As Australia’s multicultural population continues to shape consumer demand, established international brands are recognising opportunities to serve diaspora communities while introducing their products to the broader market.

For BIBA, Melbourne represents the starting point of its Australian retail journey. For local shoppers, the new store brings the colour, craftsmanship and evolving character of Indian fashion closer to home.
