The vibrant traditions of Telangana came alive in North Queensland as the Telugu Association of North Queensland (TANQ) hosted a colourful Bathukamma festival on October 17 at the Riverway Community Centre in Douglas, Townsville.

The celebration brought together Telugu families, children, elders and members of the wider Australian community for an afternoon of traditional Bathukamma songs, folk dances, beautiful floral arrangements and authentic Telangana cuisine.
The event provided an opportunity for the Telugu community to celebrate its cultural heritage, strengthen community connections and share its traditions with people from diverse backgrounds.
Bathukamma: Celebrating Nature, Women and Cultural Heritage
Bathukamma is one of Telangana’s most cherished festivals, celebrating nature, seasonal flowers, womanhood and community unity.

Women create colourful, tiered floral arrangements using seasonal flowers. Gathering in circles around the displays, they sing traditional songs and perform folk dances, creating an atmosphere of joy, togetherness and cultural pride.
The festival reflects Telangana’s distinctive cultural identity and rich folk traditions. Celebrating Bathukamma in Australia also gives younger generations an opportunity to connect with their cultural roots and understand the traditions passed down by their families.
Queensland Assistant Minister Joins the Celebrations
The event was attended by Janelle Poole MP, State Member for Mundingburra and Queensland Assistant Minister for Community Safety, Defence Industry, Veterans and North Queensland.

A Townsville local who grew up in Cranbrook, Ms Poole previously served in the Queensland Police Service from 1996 and received the Australian Police Medal in 2015 in recognition of her contribution to policing and the community.
During the celebrations, Ms Poole met members of the Telugu community and learned about Bathukamma’s cultural significance and its connections with Navaratri. She interacted with women participating in the festivities and joined them in dancing, sharing in the spirit of the occasion.
She also sampled traditional dishes prepared by Telugu families and learned more about their culinary traditions.

Her participation highlighted how cultural celebrations can create opportunities for meaningful interaction, encourage mutual understanding and strengthen connections between people from different backgrounds.
Passing Cultural Traditions to Future Generations
For Telugu families living overseas, festivals such as Bathukamma play an important role in maintaining connections with their language, culture and family traditions.

Through arranging flowers, singing traditional songs and explaining the festival’s significance, older generations help children and young people experience their heritage firsthand.
The participation of parents, grandparents, young people and children at the Townsville event demonstrated how cultural celebrations can strengthen relationships between generations and help preserve traditions far from their homeland.
Celebrating Multicultural Diversity in North Queensland
A key feature of the celebration was the involvement of Australian friends and community members alongside the Telugu community. Through traditional food, music and dance, attendees had the opportunity to experience the richness of Telangana culture.

TANQ continues to bring Telugu families together across North Queensland. With the support of families and volunteers, events such as Bathukamma help foster belonging, build community relationships and preserve cultural heritage.
Originating in Telangana and now celebrated by communities around the world, Bathukamma brought its colourful floral traditions to Townsville, creating a welcoming space for cultural exchange and friendship.
More than a festival, the celebration reflected the unity of the Telugu community and the important role multicultural events play in Australia’s diverse society.

In Townsville, Bathukamma became a celebration of flowers, family, cultural pride and the shared community spirit that brings people together across cultures.
