Sydney’s newest waterfront attraction is already making waves, with the Sydney Fish Market welcoming over one million visitors in less than two months. Since opening its doors on 19 January, the iconic harbourside destination has quickly become a go-to spot for locals and tourists looking to experience fresh seafood, dining and vibrant public spaces.

Visitors have been flocking to the market to explore its mix of seafood vendors, restaurants, bars and retail spaces. Drawn in by world-class produce and diverse food options, many stay longer to relax by the harbour, with tiered seating and communal tables creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere for families, friends and visitors.
The experience has been further enhanced by a series of community events held at the Civic Plaza. From Australia Day celebrations to Lunar New Year lion dances and a multi-week twilight concert series, the market has quickly evolved into a cultural hub offering more than just food and dining.

Adding to its growing reputation, the Sydney Fish Market has been recognised by TIME as one of the “World’s Greatest Places of 2026”, further cementing its status as a must-visit destination. The recognition highlights its appeal not just as a market, but as a standout global attraction.
Despite the early surge in crowds, the market is now settling into a more comfortable rhythm. Locals can enjoy shopping and dining experiences at different times of the day, making it easier to explore the venue without the initial rush while still enjoying its lively atmosphere.

Spanning over 6,000 square metres of public open space, the market offers more than just seafood. Visitors can enjoy waterfront promenades, creative installations and interactive features, including a family-friendly water play area that adds to its appeal as a destination for all ages.
The site also celebrates cultural and historical connections, with installations reflecting First Nations heritage and maritime history. Features along the promenade tell stories of the coastline and its communities, creating a deeper connection between visitors and the site’s past, present and future.

Looking ahead, the NSW Government is partnering with Mirvac to redevelop the original fish market site at Blackwattle Bay. The project will deliver new homes, parkland and a waterfront promenade, completing a key section of Sydney’s foreshore walk and further enhancing the city’s harbour lifestyle experience.
