National Lunchbox Week is a nationwide initiative by Nutrition Australia that inspires families to create enjoyable, nourishing lunchboxes for children. Held at the start of Term 1 each year, the campaign provides timely support as families return to the routine of daily lunchbox packing.

At its heart, National Lunchbox Week celebrates the lunchbox as a reflection of diversity, enjoyment and nourishment. By encouraging positive, pressure-free lunchbox experiences, the campaign supports children’s wellbeing and helps build a healthy, lifelong relationship with food.
Why Lunchboxes Matter
Did you know that children consume around one third of their daily food intake at school? This makes the lunchbox a powerful contributor to children’s energy levels, concentration, behaviour and overall wellbeing.
National Lunchbox Week supports families, schools and early childhood settings by:
- Inspiring practical lunchbox ideas and simple recipes
- Supporting positive, inclusive lunchbox experiences for children
- Embracing the diversity of lunchboxes across cultures, preferences and family circumstances
- Promoting supportive, judgment-free conversations around food.

Resources, recipes and guidance are available all year round, with free printables and activities designed to make healthy lunchbox preparation simple and achievable.
Supporting Families Across NSW
At Nutrition NSW, we are committed to supporting families, carers and educators to build healthier habits through realistic and nourishing lunchbox choices. This includes helping children understand the five core food groups and guiding families to create balanced lunchboxes that reflect individual tastes, culture and dietary needs.
Equally important is involving children in the process – from packing lunches to talking about food choices together. These conversations foster confidence, curiosity and positive attitudes towards eating from a young age.

Families and schools can also download the Healthy Lunchbox Guide poster, a practical resource perfect for classrooms, newsletters or family noticeboards.
Eat the Rainbow: Small Changes, Big Benefits
One simple way to boost variety and nutrition is by “eating the rainbow.” Different coloured fruits and vegetables contain different plant nutrients (phytochemicals) that help support immunity, reduce inflammation and protect the body’s cells.
To celebrate this idea, National Lunchbox Week (9–15 February 2026) invites families to take part in the 5-Day Rainbow Lunchbox Challenge:
- Monday – Red: Wholegrain wrap with tomato and cheese, strawberries on the side
- Tuesday – Orange/Yellow: Carrot sticks with hummus, pumpkin muffin
- Wednesday – Green: Pesto pasta with peas and broccoli florets, kiwi fruit
- Thursday – Blue/Purple: Blueberry yoghurt parfait, sliced purple grapes
- Friday – White/Brown: Cauliflower “trees” with bean dip, banana

How many colours can you pack into your lunchbox this week?

A Message from the President of Nutrition NSW
Cr Barbara Ward
“As President of Nutrition NSW, I am proud that we once again support National Lunchbox Week – a wonderful national initiative that brings communities across New South Wales together to champion enjoyable, nourishing lunchboxes for every child.
Each year, this campaign offers families, carers and educators fresh inspiration through practical tips, simple recipes and encouraging ideas that make healthy lunchbox packing achievable and pressure free.
We recognise that every lunchbox is shaped by family culture, personal preferences and available resources. Lunchbox packing is never about perfection – it’s about finding what works for you and helping children build a positive, lifelong relationship with food.
Lunchtime is more than a meal; it’s a chance for children to connect, learn and thrive. National Lunchbox Week celebrates the collective effort of families, schools, early childhood services and health advocates working together to create inclusive, nourishing lunchtime experiences.
Please join me and the Nutrition NSW team in celebrating National Lunchbox Week. Follow us on social media for more tips and resources, or connect with us to book the Reclaim the Lunchbox Program for your school community.”
