With both countries sharing a deep passion for sports, the forum brings together key decision-makers, sporting institutions, universities, and industry leaders from both nations to explore opportunities for collaboration in elite sports.
A key partner in this forum is Deakin University, Australia, which operates a campus in GIFT City. Deakin University’s expertise in sports science and management supports the forum’s mission to advance bilateral cooperation in high-performance sports.

Strengthening Australia-India Relations
The relationship between India and Australia has strengthened significantly in recent years, particularly in areas like trade, education, and sports. Both countries share democratic values, a commitment to sustainable development, and a mutual interest in growing their sporting cultures. Australia’s participation in India’s sports development, especially in sports science, athlete development, and event management, reflects the growing ties between the two nations.
Australia’s High Commissioner to India, H.E. Philip Green OAM, emphasized that India’s sports history and its future potential align with Australia’s strengths. He said, “India is a great sporting nation with a rich tradition, and Australia’s expertise in sports science and management can help India realize its sports ambitions.”
Both governments have recognized the importance of sports in fostering international diplomacy, unity, and cultural exchange. As part of this, the Australia-India Sports Excellence Forum seeks to create a pathway for greater cooperation, bringing together not only experts from the sporting world but also academia and industry to develop actionable strategies that benefit both countries.

Australia’s Support for India’s Olympic Dreams
One of the key focuses of the forum was India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games. India is on a mission to become a global leader in sports, and the forum provides a valuable opportunity for collaboration with Australia. Discussions centered around areas such as athlete development, Olympic and Paralympic success, sports science, and how both nations can work together to build sustainable sporting infrastructure.
Smt. Raksha Khadse, India’s Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, emphasized the role of sports in national growth, stating, “Sports is a unifying force and a key pillar for national development. This forum marks a significant step in exploring new opportunities for collaboration between India and Australia.”
Deakin University’s Role in Advancing Sports Excellence
Deakin University’s contribution to the forum highlighted the growing role of higher education in fostering sports excellence. Deakin is a global leader in sports education and research, with its campus in GIFT City contributing to the development of sports science programs in India. Professor (Dr.) Adam Karg and Associate Professor (Dr.) Lyndell Bruce from Deakin shared their expertise in areas such as athlete performance, data-driven training methods, and the importance of research in sports development.
