India’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Australia, Nagesh Singh, formally assumed his diplomatic responsibilities after presenting his credentials to Sam Mostyn on 5 May 2026.
The credentials ceremony took place at Government House in Canberra, marking the official commencement of Mr Singh’s tenure as India’s top diplomatic representative in Australia. Following the ceremony, the new High Commissioner inspected the Guard of Honour, a longstanding diplomatic tradition that symbolises the formal recognition of a foreign envoy by the host nation.
Mr Singh is a senior officer of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) from the 1995 batch and brings with him extensive diplomatic experience. Prior to his appointment to Australia, he served as India’s Ambassador to Thailand and has previously held several key diplomatic roles, including Chief of Protocol in India’s Ministry of External Affairs and Consul General of India in Atlanta, United States.
His appointment comes at a significant time in the growing relationship between India and Australia. Over recent years, the two nations have strengthened cooperation across several sectors including trade, education, defence, technology, renewable energy, and people-to-people ties.
Australia is home to a large and rapidly growing Indian diaspora, including a vibrant South Asian community that continues to play an important role in strengthening cultural and economic connections between the two countries.
The arrival of the new High Commissioner is expected to further deepen bilateral engagement and support ongoing collaboration between India and Australia in the Indo-Pacific region.
In a post shared on social media following the ceremony, the High Commissioner’s office stated that Mr Singh presented his credentials to the Governor-General of Australia and officially began his tenure in Canberra.
The Indian community across Australia is expected to closely follow his engagements in the coming months, particularly in areas relating to diaspora relations, education partnerships, business collaboration, and cultural exchange.
