A shocking incident of racial violence in Western Sydney has sparked deep concern across the Australian Indian community and broader multicultural groups. The attack took place on 10 November 2025 at Parramatta Shopping Centre, where a law-abiding Australian citizen of Indian heritage was subjected to a violent racial assault in the early evening.

Community leaders emphasise that this distressing incident is not an isolated case. Individuals of Indian and Indian Sub-continental heritage have faced similar acts of racial hostility in Sydney and across Australia in the past. Many fear that unless strong and immediate action is taken, such incidents may increase, especially during the heightened national debate on Australian immigration currently circulating in the public space.

Strathfield Australians of Indian Sub-continental Heritage SAISH expressed gratitude to the paramedics and hospital staff who provided urgent medical care for the victim’s significant injuries. However, the organisation voiced strong concern about the broader social climate that may be enabling racial tensions. While it is unclear whether recent public comments by a politician may have contributed to this incident, SAISH warns that unchecked rhetoric rooted in bias or misinformation can fuel violence.

Several parliamentarians have already taken to their social media platforms to condemn the attack. SAISH also acknowledged the positive sentiment expressed by both the Premier of New South Wales and the Prime Minister of Australia, who have consistently described migrants as valued members of the Australian community.

Despite these messages of support, SAISH believes the time has come for concrete and immediate measures to ensure public safety and prevent future acts of racial violence.

In a strong statement, the organisation called upon all New South Wales and Federal parliamentarians to take coordinated action through legislative and legal frameworks. SAISH urged leaders to commit to robust protections for all Australians irrespective of heritage including those of Indian, Sri Lankan, Chinese, Bangladeshi, Nepalese, Pakistani and Middle Eastern backgrounds.

The organisation outlined several urgent demands:

  • Parliamentarians in the New South Wales Parliament, led by the Premier and Leader of the Opposition, formulate and adopt legislative measures that effectively prevent any form of racial violence
  • The Code of Conduct for New South Wales parliamentarians be reviewed and strengthened to stop members from making biased or inflammatory comments targeting specific communities
  • Parliamentarians in the Federal Parliament, led by the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Federal Opposition, introduce similar national legislation to curb racial attacks anywhere in Australia
  • The Federal Parliament revise its Code of Conduct to prevent parliamentarians from making biased statements about any group based on cultural or ethnic heritage

SAISH reiterated its core belief that every citizen in Australia, regardless of background, deserves to live in an environment where they can pursue their ambitions freely and confidently. From visiting public places to building careers, individuals must be able to do so without fear of prejudice or violence.
