A new chapter has begun at the Wyndham City Council, with Preet Singh officially elected as Mayor, bringing an end to weeks of leadership uncertainty. His appointment marks a significant moment for one of Australia’s fastest-growing municipalities, following a closely contested council vote.

The leadership change comes after a period of instability triggered by the suspension of the previous mayor, which left the council without clear direction. A tied vote had initially stalled the decision, but a subsequent council meeting saw Singh secure majority support, breaking the deadlock and establishing a new leadership team.

Singh, who was first elected as a councillor in 2024 and served as Deputy Mayor prior to this role, described his appointment as an honour and a responsibility. A long-time resident of Wyndham for over 20 years, he emphasised his commitment to serving the community and delivering outcomes that reflect the region’s rapid growth.

His leadership comes at a critical time for Wyndham, a region experiencing significant population growth and increasing demand for infrastructure. Singh has highlighted key priorities including investment in roads, public transport, community facilities, and local services to meet the needs of residents.

Alongside him, Jasmine Hill has been elected as Deputy Mayor, signalling a renewed focus on stability and collaboration within the council. The new leadership team is expected to prioritise transparency, unity and practical outcomes for the community moving forward.

Singh is known for his strong focus on community safety, infrastructure development and support for local businesses. Outside of his council role, he also runs a local business, bringing a grassroots perspective to governance and community engagement.

For the growing South Asian community in Australia, Singh’s appointment also carries broader significance. His rise reflects the increasing representation of multicultural voices in local leadership, particularly in regions like Wyndham where diversity is a defining feature of the population.

As Wyndham continues to expand, expectations around leadership remain high. With a clear mandate now in place, Preet Singh’s tenure as Mayor will be closely watched as he works to guide the council through its next phase of growth and development.
