The New South Wales Government has announced a healthcare package worth more than $38 million to strengthen services at Westmead Hospital, one of Australia’s busiest public health facilities. The investment is aimed at increasing patient capacity, improving specialist care and supporting frontline healthcare workers across Western Sydney.

A key component of the package is the addition of 18 specialty beds across high-demand areas, including cardiology, respiratory medicine and the Emergency Department Short Stay Unit. The new beds are expected to improve patient flow and reduce pressure on emergency services during periods of high demand.

The funding will also expand Westmead Hospital’s respiratory outreach service, allowing specialist teams to provide earlier intervention and ongoing care for patients with complex respiratory conditions. The initiative is designed to improve health outcomes while helping reduce avoidable hospital admissions.

Another significant measure includes expanding allied health services at both Westmead and Blacktown hospitals. Occupational therapists, physiotherapists and social workers will transition to seven-day rosters, enabling faster patient assessments, improved rehabilitation and more timely hospital discharges throughout the week.

NSW Health Minister Ryan Park said the package is intended to deliver practical improvements for patients while easing pressure on hospital staff. He noted that the investment forms part of broader efforts to strengthen healthcare services across Western Sydney as the region’s population continues to grow.

The announcement comes as Westmead Hospital continues to experience significant demand, with a number of beds occupied by patients awaiting aged care or disability support placements. By increasing bed capacity and strengthening discharge services, the government aims to improve access to treatment for patients requiring hospital care.

Medical organisations have welcomed the additional investment while emphasising the importance of continued workforce growth and long-term planning. Health experts say further investment in medical staff, community healthcare and outpatient services will remain essential as demand continues to increase across Western Sydney.

The healthcare package complements the NSW Government’s broader investments in the Westmead Health Precinct, which is one of Australia’s leading centres for healthcare, medical research and education. Ongoing redevelopment projects are expected to further enhance services for one of the country’s fastest-growing regions.

The latest funding reinforces the state’s commitment to building a more resilient and responsive public health system for the future.
