The sporting partnership between India and Australia entered a new phase of strategic cooperation as senior officials, administrators, and industry leaders from both nations gathered at the FICCI TURF 2025 Global Sports Summit in New Delhi. The discussions underscored a shared commitment to elevating the bilateral sporting relationship through structured collaboration, athlete development, innovation, and modern sports governance.

A key highlight of the summit was the unveiling of the “Strategy for Sports Collaboration between India and Australia: A Comprehensive Partnership from Grassroots to Podium.” The document was formally released by the High Commissioner of India to Australia, Shri Gopal Baglay, who led the ceremony alongside the High Commissioner of Australia to India, H.E. Philip Green, Secretary of the Department of Sports, Shri Hari Ranjan Rao, the report’s author Ms. Molina Asthana, and Director General of FICCI, Ms. Jyoti Vij.

In his remarks, Shri Baglay noted the rapidly expanding India–Australia bilateral relationship and emphasised the central role of strong people-to-people links. He described TURF 2025 as a timely initiative that aligns with the transformational changes underway in India’s sports sector. Highlighting the significance of the Strategy Report, he stated that it identifies the immense potential to expand collaboration by pairing India’s sporting aspirations with Australia’s established strengths. The High Commissioner expressed confidence that the recommendations will serve as a foundation for future cooperation and help shape a clear roadmap for both nations.

He also extended his appreciation to Ms. Molina Asthana, a respected sports-industry expert and National Chair for Sports, Arts, and Culture at the Australia India Business Council, for her substantial contribution in preparing the Strategy Report.

The conversations underscored the growing relevance of sports diplomacy as a pillar of international relations. India and Australia have increasingly relied on sporting exchanges to enhance cultural understanding, foster people-to-people ties, and build long-term institutional partnerships. The summit reaffirmed this approach, positioning sport as a catalyst for broader cooperation between the two nations.

Australia’s High Commissioner to India delivered the Partner Country Address, reiterating Australia’s commitment to deepening sporting ties and expanding cooperation across multiple disciplines.

Parallel to the release of the Strategy Report, Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha underlined the importance of learning from global best practices to accelerate India’s sporting development. She emphasised that high-performance training, data-driven coaching, and enhanced grassroots programs will be essential for long-term success.

Australian delegates reinforced these ideas, noting that while cricket remains a strong link between the two nations, broader opportunities exist in Olympic sports, sports technology, injury prevention, coaching education, and athlete exchange pathways. Officials highlighted the importance of integrated systems, private-sector partnerships, and evidence-based planning to support the next generation of athletes.

The summit’s sessions explored policy frameworks, collaborative high-performance initiatives, and the increasing relevance of sports diplomacy as a tool to strengthen cultural and institutional ties. Both sides acknowledged that sport has become an important platform for deepening bilateral engagement while fostering mutual understanding.
