Auckland’s Kiwi-Indian community is mourning the death of Bhupesh Patel, a husband and father of two young boys who died several days after being struck by a vehicle while cycling home from work.
Patel was seriously injured in a crash on Rosebank Road in Avondale, Auckland, on September 2. Emergency services attended the scene at around 4pm, with ambulance staff treating him before he was taken to Auckland City Hospital in critical condition. He later died from his injuries over the weekend.
The tragedy has left Patel’s family, friends and colleagues devastated, with those who knew him remembering him as a caring, generous and dedicated person who was deeply committed to his family.
Patel had reportedly finished work earlier than usual on the day of the crash because he wanted to get home in time to take his two sons to their Kempo martial arts class. He was cycling along Rosebank Road when he was struck by a vehicle and never made it home.
His employer, JMP Engineering, described Patel as a much-loved member of its team and said his sudden death had left colleagues deeply shocked. The company said that beyond being a valued colleague, he was a devoted husband and father whose loss had placed an enormous emotional and practical burden on his family.
Colleagues remembered Patel for his kindness, generosity and willingness to help others. They also spoke of his dedication at work, as well as the warmth, humour and friendship he brought to those around him.
A fundraising campaign has now been established to support Patel’s family following his death. The Givealittle appeal, organised by friends and colleagues, is intended to help his family manage the immediate and longer-term financial pressures resulting from the sudden loss of a husband and father.
The campaign has received a strong response from the community. More than $18,000 had been donated by 167 people when the latest fundraising page information was checked, reflecting the impact Patel had on those who knew him and the desire of friends, colleagues and members of the wider community to stand beside his family.
Police have confirmed that the Serious Crash Unit examined the scene and that inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the collision are continuing. Details of the investigation and any potential findings have not yet been finalised.
For those who knew Bhupesh Patel, however, the focus is now on remembering the person behind the tragedy: a father who was trying to get home to his children, a husband, a colleague and a friend whose life was suddenly cut short.
His death has also renewed attention on the vulnerability of cyclists sharing Auckland roads with vehicles, particularly along busy routes. For Patel’s family, the immediate priority remains coping with an unimaginable loss and supporting his two young sons as they face life without their father.
