According to multiple reports, the visit is likely to form part of a broader regional tour that includes Indonesia and New Zealand, with Australia scheduled as the final leg.

Expected Itinerary and Key Dates

While official confirmation is still pending, diplomatic sources suggest that Prime Minister Modi could arrive in Australia for a two-day visit around 9–10 July 2026.

The visit would mark his third trip to Australia, following earlier visits in 2014 and 2023, reflecting the deepening ties between the two nations.

Sydney for Diplomacy, Melbourne for the Diaspora

Early indications point to a dual-city focus for the visit. Sydney is expected to host official bilateral engagements with Anthony Albanese, reinforcing the growing Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.

Meanwhile, Melbourne has emerged as the frontrunner for a large-scale diaspora event, which is likely to be the public highlight of the visit.

Officials have reportedly inspected major indoor venues capable of hosting between 14,000 and 35,000 attendees, ensuring the event can proceed smoothly despite winter weather conditions.

High Demand for Business and Community Engagements

The visit has also sparked strong interest among business and community organisations seeking to host high-level engagements with the Indian leader.

Groups such as the Australia India Business Council (AIBC), which is marking its 40th anniversary, and the Australia–India CEO Forum are understood to be competing to organise a flagship business event during the visit.

However, reports suggest that only one organisation is likely to be selected for an official engagement, with discussions ongoing behind the scenes.

Focus on Education, Trade and Strategic Ties

Beyond the diaspora gathering, the visit is expected to include a range of engagements across trade, education and strategic cooperation.

In Victoria, plans are reportedly being shaped for an education-focused roundtable, positioning the state as a key destination for Indian students and strengthening academic collaboration between the two countries.

Broader discussions are also likely to cover economic cooperation, critical minerals, technology partnerships and defence ties – areas that have become central to the India–Australia relationship in recent years.

Building on Strong Bilateral Momentum

Prime Minister Modi’s last visit to Australia in 2023 drew massive crowds and led to key outcomes, including agreements on mobility, clean energy cooperation and expanded diplomatic presence.

The upcoming visit is expected to build on that momentum, further strengthening connections not only at the government level but also within Australia’s rapidly growing Indian diaspora.

Anticipation Builds Across Communities

As preparations continue, excitement is already building across communities, particularly in Melbourne, where large-scale diaspora events have historically attracted tens of thousands of attendees.

If confirmed, the July visit is set to be one of the most significant diplomatic engagements of the year – combining high-level policy discussions with a powerful celebration of people-to-people ties between India and Australia.
