In a deeply touching display of heritage, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged to protect the sacred ‘Jore Sahib’-the holy footwear of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji and Mata Sahib Kaur Ji-following a delegation’s recommendations to preserve and display the relics respectfully. The meeting, held this week in New Delhi, was spearheaded by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and brought together eminent Sikh Sangat members with a proposal rooted in centuries of devotion, tradition, and pride.

The ‘Jore Sahib’, consisting of two small pairs of shoes-one approximately 11 by 3½ inches belonging to Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the other 9 by 3 inches for Mata Sahib Kaur Ji-have been preserved by the Puri family for over 300 years. Their ancestors performed seva (service) after they were bestowed these items by the Gurus themselves, a tradition carried forward through generations.

During the meeting, Modi emphasized that relics such as these are not just symbols of faith but integral threads in India’s cultural fabric. He affirmed that they inspire future generations to embrace virtues like courage, justice, righteousness, and social harmony-values embodied by Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

As part of the preservation process, carbon-testing has been completed to affirm their authenticity. Recommendations submitted by the delegation outline both the physical safekeeping of the relics and their public display in a manner befitting their spiritual and historical importance.

The meeting also carried a powerful spiritual moment: renowned singer Harshdeep Kaur recited the Mool Mantra, while Modi, with head respectfully covered, joined in-a gesture symbolic of reverence and unity. The entire gathering reinforced the connection between faith, heritage, and leadership.

For Sikhs in India and the global diaspora-including here in Australia-this is more than heritage in history books. It is a living legacy and a reaffirmation that sacred traditions are being treated with respect and care at the highest levels of governance.
