Bollywood is preparing for the arrival of Haiwaan, a new Hindi thriller that brings together Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan and director Priyadarshan in a markedly darker cinematic setting. The film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on 11 September 2026, with its recently released trailer giving audiences their first substantial look at the suspense-driven story.
The project has attracted particular attention because of the reunion between Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan. The two actors are returning to the screen together after approximately 18 years, but rather than revisiting the lighter territory associated with some of their earlier work, Haiwaan places them at the centre of a tense crime and psychological thriller.
Priyadarshan, known for moving comfortably between comedy, drama and suspense, is directing the film from a screenplay developed with writers Abilash Nair and Rohan Shankar. The production is backed by KVN Productions and Thespian Films, with Venkat K Narayana and Shailaja Desai Fenn serving as producers.
At the centre of the story is Saif Ali Khan’s character, a visually impaired former martial artist who becomes involved in protecting a young girl from a dangerous criminal. Available information about the film points towards a battle of intelligence and survival, with the protagonist forced to confront an adversary whose actions place those around him in serious danger.
Akshay Kumar takes an unusual turn as the film’s principal antagonist. Rather than playing the conventional heroic character audiences often associate with him, he portrays a deeply sinister figure whose actions drive the central conflict. The actor has described the character as an unapologetically evil villain and said that taking on such a role offered him an opportunity to explore a different side of his performance.
The decision to cast Kumar as the antagonist reportedly came after the actor himself showed interest in the part. Priyadarshan initially believed the suggestion might have been a joke, while Saif was also reportedly surprised by the choice. The filmmaker eventually embraced the idea, creating an unusual pairing in which the two established stars occupy opposing sides of the story.
Saif’s performance has also involved a deliberate approach to portraying visual impairment. Priyadarshan has said he wanted the character to be presented without exaggerated gestures or stereotypical behaviour. His direction focused on making the condition part of the character’s internal experience rather than relying on obvious physical mannerisms.
The supporting cast adds further depth to the project, with Shriya Pilgaonkar, Saiyami Kher and Boman Irani among the performers associated with the film. Boman Irani’s involvement is also notable because it reunites him with Priyadarshan after 12 years, while the actor has indicated that the new project represents a departure from the comedy-oriented collaborations audiences may expect from the pair.
The recently released trailer has strengthened the film’s thriller credentials, presenting a dangerous pursuit involving a vulnerable child, a determined protector and a threatening adversary. Rather than revealing the complete mystery, the preview focuses on the growing confrontation between the central characters and the psychological pressure surrounding their encounter.
The film’s promotional campaign began with its teaser in August, followed by the song “Mere Hero Hai Woh” and the theatrical trailer. The trailer was released on 25 August, giving audiences a fuller indication of the film’s darker tone and the contrasting performances of Kumar and Khan.
For Priyadarshan, Haiwaan represents another shift in creative territory. While the filmmaker has directed several successful comedies, his latest project is positioned as a suspense-heavy drama built around danger, pursuit and psychological tension. The combination of his direction with two established leading actors gives the film a distinctive profile ahead of its cinema release.
The reunion of Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan is likely to remain one of the film’s biggest talking points. Their previous collaborations have created a familiar on-screen association for audiences, but Haiwaan deliberately changes that dynamic by placing them on opposite sides of a much more serious conflict.
