The Indian High Commission has clarified that while VFS-operated Consular, Passport and Visa (CPV) services remain temporarily unavailable across Australia, essential consular assistance continues through Indian diplomatic missions. The clarification comes as many applicants continue to experience delays following the suspension that began on 1 July.

The temporary disruption is linked to ongoing legal proceedings concerning the outsourcing arrangements for Indian consular services. Until the matter is resolved, passport, visa, OCI and several other services that are normally processed through VFS Global remain on hold across Australia.
Authorities have emphasised that this is an administrative and legal matter rather than a change in India’s visa policy. The Indian High Commission and its Consulates continue to assist citizens in genuine emergency situations and are providing limited services wherever possible during the transition period.
The disruption has affected many members of the Indian community, including travellers awaiting visas, passport renewals, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) applications and Police Clearance Certificates. Applicants with upcoming travel plans are being encouraged to monitor official announcements before making appointments or finalising travel arrangements.
VFS Global has confirmed on its official website that Consular, Passport and Visa services remain temporarily unavailable until further notice in accordance with instructions issued by the High Commission of India. The company has advised applicants to await further updates before visiting service centres.
Community organisations and migration professionals have acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the temporary pause while encouraging applicants to remain patient. Many have also advised those with urgent requirements to contact the relevant Indian Consulate directly to understand what emergency assistance may be available.
Legal proceedings related to the service arrangements are continuing, and a final resolution is expected to determine when normal VFS operations can resume. Until then, no official date has been announced for the full restoration of passport, visa and OCI processing across Australia.
The Indian High Commission has assured the community that updates will be issued as soon as further decisions are made. Applicants are encouraged to rely only on official communications from the High Commission and VFS Global to avoid misinformation and to receive the latest guidance on available services.
For thousands of Indian nationals and people of Indian origin living in Australia, the temporary disruption remains an inconvenience, but officials have reiterated that efforts are underway to restore normal services once the legal process concludes. Until then, emergency consular assistance continues to be available through India’s diplomatic missions in Australia.
