Celebrating Five Decades of Medicine, Community, and Culture

Dr Prabhat Raj Sinha’s journey began in Gwalior, India, and led him across continents to Australia in 1973, driven by the pursuit of new horizons. His early years in Sydney saw him serve as a Senior Medical Officer with the Health Commission of NSW until 1975, after which he established his own private practice. As the founder of Strathfield Plaza Family Medical Practice, Dr Sinha devoted over five decades to delivering compassionate, high-quality medical care.

“His warmth, gentle manner, and reassuring presence earned the trust of generations of patients, many of whom travelled long distances to seek his care.”

Dr Sinha’s commitment to medicine was matched only by his dedication to community and cultural life. A proud Indian Australian, he embraced citizenship to fully participate in the life of his adopted country while preserving Indian traditions and heritage alongside his wife, Neena Sinha, and their two children, Piyush and Pallavi.

Building Strong Communities and Preserving Indian Culture

Dr Sinha’s influence extended far beyond his medical practice. As Founder and President of Sri Mandir in Auburn, he played a pivotal role in establishing one of the first Hindu temples in Australia, nurturing it into a vibrant hub for religious, cultural, and social activities. He also initiated Navrang, an annual cultural programme showcasing Indian performing arts and encouraging youth participation.

As Founder Member and Past President of the United Indian Association (UIA), he strengthened community engagement through forums for youth, women, and seniors. In 2006, as UIA President and Director of the India Australia Fair, he led a landmark event attended by over 20,000 people, fostering cultural exchange and inviting participation from other ethnic and faith communities.

“Dr Sinha’s vision was always inclusive, bringing together people from all walks of life to celebrate culture, heritage, and unity.”

His community involvement extended to Strathfield Council’s Multicultural Committee, founding the Strathfield Australians of Indian Sub-Continental Heritage Inc., organising Deepavali celebrations in NSW Parliament, and promoting Hindi language education through Hindi Samaaj and the Kayasth Vahini Association.

He also contributed to healthcare advocacy, serving as Vice-President of the Overseas and Australian Medical Graduates Association, and International Services Director Rotary Club of Strathfield raising significant funds for healthcare initiatives and elderly care. Dr Sinha also served as a Worshipful Master of the Masonic Lodge.

A Passion for Media, Arts, and Cultural Expression

Dr Sinha’s talents extended to media and the arts. He was a broadcaster with Radio 2EA (now SBS Radio), participated in community radio programs, and was interviewed by the BBC on issues affecting Indian students in Australia. A gifted performer and writer, he directed and acted in stage and radio dramas, including producing the first Hindi play in Australia, “Purdah Uthne Se Pehle.”

He was also a poet in Hindi and Urdu, regularly participating in Kavi Sammelans and Mushairas, and contributed articles on social, economic, and medical issues to community publications. In 2026, his expertise was sought for a SBS TV documentary, underscoring his status as a trusted voice on community matters.

“He embraced every opportunity to serve, to bring people together, and to uplift those around him.”

Recognition, Awards, and the Lasting Impact of a Life Well Lived

Dr Sinha’s outstanding service earned him numerous accolades, including Inner West Business Awards for his medical practice and a Premier of NSW Government Award for Community Service.

Even in his final journey to India, his dedication remained unwavering. During his flight, he provided medical care at the request of a fellow passenger, exemplifying his lifelong commitment to helping others.

He passed away in his beloved homeland India, and his ashes were immersed in the Ganges by his family. Dr Sinha is fondly remembered by his wife, children, grandchildren, patients, and the wider community for his gentle smile, high standards of care, and tireless service.

“His enduring legacy is one of kindness, humility, compassion, and unwavering dedication.”
