A devastating fire has destroyed Gurudwara Dashmesh Darbar in Adelaide’s northern suburbs, leaving South Australia’s Sikh community mourning the loss of one of its important religious and cultural institutions. The blaze, which tore through the Virginia-based gurudwara late on Sunday night, caused extensive damage to the building and has prompted an investigation into its cause.
Emergency services were called to Old Port Wakefield Road in Virginia shortly after 9.30pm on Sunday, where they were confronted by a large and rapidly spreading fire engulfing the Sikh temple. More than 60 firefighters attended the scene and worked for several hours to bring the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading to nearby properties.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, as the gurudwara was unoccupied at the time of the incident. However, the emotional toll on the local Sikh community has been immense, with many describing the loss as heartbreaking.
Witnesses reported seeing large flames and hearing explosions as the fire intensified. Parts of the building’s roof collapsed during the incident, leaving much of the structure destroyed. Fire crews remained on site throughout the night as investigators began assessing the damage.
Established in 2024, Gurudwara Dashmesh Darbar quickly became an important spiritual and community hub for Adelaide’s growing Sikh population. In addition to hosting religious services, the gurudwara regularly welcomed visitors from all backgrounds and provided langar – free community meals served regardless of religion, ethnicity or social status.
The temple played a significant role in bringing together families, volunteers and community members through religious celebrations, cultural events and charitable initiatives. For many, it was far more than a place of worship – it was a symbol of community service, unity and Sikh values.
President of Gurudwara Dashmesh Darbar, Bakshish Singh, described the incident as a tragic loss for the community. Community members rushed to the site after learning of the fire, but emergency crews prevented anyone from entering the building due to safety concerns and the risk of structural collapse.
One of the community’s immediate concerns has been the sacred Sikh scriptures, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, which were housed inside the gurudwara. Efforts are expected to be made to determine whether the holy scriptures can be respectfully recovered following safety assessments by authorities.
The South Australian Country Fire Service also issued a smoke advisory for residents in Virginia and surrounding areas while firefighters continued their operations. Authorities have confirmed that Fire Cause Investigators and South Australia Police are now working to determine how the blaze started.
At this stage, officials have not indicated that the fire is suspicious in nature. Investigations remain ongoing, and further information is expected to be released once emergency services have completed their assessments.
The incident has sparked an outpouring of support from members of Adelaide’s multicultural community, with many expressing solidarity with the Sikh community during this difficult time. Messages of condolences and offers of assistance have begun emerging across social media platforms as community leaders rally around those affected.
