If you’re anything like me, winter usually means convincing yourself to leave the house. But Illuminate Adelaide is one of those events that makes it completely worth it.

Every year, Adelaide lights up with immersive art, music, technology, and experiences that make the city feel brand new. From glowing installations to interactive games and incredible light shows, it’s the kind of festival that reminds you there’s always something exciting happening, even in the middle of winter.
Running from 1 to 19 July (with some experiences starting from 26 June), Illuminate Adelaide takes over some of the city’s most iconic locations. Instead of sitting in one venue, the festival spreads across Adelaide, turning familiar streets, gardens, and buildings into something magical.
If you’re an international student, this is one of the best ways to experience Adelaide beyond lectures, work, and your usual weekend plans. It’s also perfect for families, couples, or anyone looking for something a little different to do with friends.

One experience I’m especially excited about is Augmented Games. Think of it as stepping inside a real-life video game where your body becomes the controller. You jump, dodge, compete, and move through different challenges, making it just as entertaining to watch as it is to play.
Another must-see is Night Visions at the Adelaide Botanic Garden. Picture walking through gardens filled with lights, projections, music, and immersive storytelling. It’s one of those experiences where you constantly stop to take photos because every corner looks different from the last.
Families will also love Universal Kingdom: Ice Age at Adelaide Zoo, where prehistoric creatures come to life through incredible illuminated displays. It’s fun, interactive, and just as exciting for adults as it is for kids.
One of the best things about Illuminate Adelaide is that you don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy it. The free City Lights trail transforms the CBD into a giant outdoor gallery, making it easy to wander through the city, discover new installations, grab a bite to eat, and make an evening out of it.
What I love most about this festival is that it gives you a reason to slow down and actually explore Adelaide. We get so caught up in uni, work, and everyday routines that we sometimes forget how much the city has to offer. Illuminate changes that. It makes you see familiar places in a completely different way.
So if you’ve been looking for a sign to get out of the house this winter, this is it. Rug up, grab your friends, charge your phone because you’ll definitely be taking photos, and go experience one of Adelaide’s biggest and most unique festivals.
Trust me, it’s one of those events you’ll be talking about long after the lights go out.
