In a landmark announcement, Minister for Multicultural Affairs Dr Anne Aly today revealed the establishment of a new Office for Multicultural Affairs within the Department of Home Affairs. This initiative marks a significant step in shaping a more inclusive and cohesive Australia, 50 years after the country’s first multiculturalism policy was introduced.

The newly formed Office will unify and enhance key functions and programs across government, driving a national, coordinated approach to multiculturalism. It will work across federal, state, and local levels to ensure equal rights, responsibilities, and opportunities for all Australians, regardless of cultural background.

“Multiculturalism is not just about or for a section of our society,” said Dr Aly. “Each and every one of us belongs to an Australia that has been enriched by our 65,000 years of First Nations culture and the successive stories, traditions and histories of those who have come across the seas.”

As a central hub, the Office will oversee settlement and language services, including the Adult Migrant English Program and Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National). It will also modernise community grant programs to ensure government services are accessible, equitable, and responsive to the needs of all Australians.

Minister for Home Affairs Tony Burke highlighted the significance of the initiative, stating,

“Modern Australia and multicultural Australia are the same thing. This Office provides a central hub for government work and makes sure every Australian feels welcomed and at home.”

The Office aims to not only celebrate multiculturalism but to embed diversity and inclusion into the fabric of public policy. It will actively engage across all sectors of government and society to promote mutual respect and strengthen social cohesion.

Further underlining the government’s commitment, the Albanese Government has elevated the role of Minister for Multicultural Affairs to Cabinet — a first in Australian history. This move underscores the central role that diversity and inclusion play in the nation’s identity and future direction.

“The establishment of a federal Office for Multicultural Affairs is a significant step, recognising the importance of not just celebrating multiculturalism but valuing diversity,” Dr Aly said.

With this initiative, Australia continues to embrace its identity as a vibrant, modern multicultural nation, united by respect, opportunity, and shared values.
