South Australia’s Premier has highlighted the remarkable contribution of the Indian community, describing its journey as one marked by resilience, ambition, and strong family values. He notes that many families who now call the state home have brought with them rich traditions, skills, and knowledge that continue to strengthen the social and cultural fabric of South Australia.

Peter Malinauskas also reflected on his own family’s migrant roots, sharing how his grandparents arrived in the state during the 1940s after fleeing hardship in Europe. Their story of perseverance and hope, he says, echoes the experiences of many migrant communities, including the vibrant and fast-growing Indian diaspora that plays a key role in shaping modern South Australia.
He emphasised that multiculturalism remains central to the state’s identity, with hundreds of cultures, languages, and faiths contributing to a diverse and inclusive society. According to the Premier, values such as mutual respect, equality, and fairness continue to bring communities together and ensure people from all backgrounds feel welcome and empowered to contribute.

The Indian community, now the fastest-growing migrant group in the state, has made a significant impact across multiple sectors. From strengthening education and supporting local businesses to contributing to cultural life and driving economic growth, their influence is visible across communities and industries throughout South Australia.
Highlighting the growing relationship between India and South Australia, the Premier recalled his recent visit to key Indian cities where discussions focused on expanding cooperation in education, trade, clean energy, agribusiness, and innovation. He noted that India has become one of the state’s most important trading partners, with strong growth in exports and increasing numbers of Indian students choosing to study in Adelaide.

Looking ahead, he reaffirmed the importance of shared democratic values between the two nations and encouraged communities to continue celebrating their cultural heritage. The Premier also expressed his appreciation for the Indian community’s ongoing contributions and said he looks forward to joining families at upcoming cultural celebrations, including the Indian Mela at Victoria Square.
