Workplace safety took centre stage in Parramatta as the NSW Government brought together hundreds of local businesses for a major community safety forum at CommBank Stadium, reinforcing its focus on protecting workers and supporting employers.

Hosted by the NSW Government, the iCare Business Community Safety Forum saw participation from nearly 300 businesses across the region. The event provided practical guidance on injury prevention, mental health support and navigating the workers compensation system – key areas impacting both employers and employees.
The forum brought together multiple agencies including icare, SafeWork NSW and SIRA, creating a collaborative platform where businesses could access resources, expert advice and support services. With workplace injuries and compensation costs in Parramatta estimated at around $302 million annually, the initiative aimed to address both financial and human impacts.
A major highlight of the event was the arrival of the $2.5 million Lung Health Mobile Clinic, offering free on-site lung screenings. The mobile clinic focuses on early detection of serious dust-related diseases such as silicosis, asbestosis and mesothelioma – conditions that remain a critical concern across several industries.

Minister for Work Health and Safety Sophie Cotsis emphasised the importance of supporting small businesses, noting their significant contribution to the state economy. With over 200,000 workers employed across Parramatta’s local businesses, the forum aimed to equip employers with the tools needed to create safer workplaces.
Recent reforms to the workers compensation system were also highlighted, marking one of the most significant updates in years. The changes prioritise injury prevention and improved return-to-work outcomes, while also ensuring that premium rates for small businesses remain stable – avoiding a projected increase.
Local MP Donna Davis acknowledged the importance of such initiatives for the community, particularly for family-run businesses that rely on accessible support and guidance to manage workplace safety effectively.

Industry representatives also shared insights into how businesses can better manage risk, reduce workplace injuries and benefit from incentives linked to strong safety performance. The focus remained on building long-term resilience while supporting employees through recovery and return-to-work processes.
As workplace health continues to evolve as a priority across industries, initiatives like the Parramatta Business Community Safety Forum highlight a proactive approach – combining education, early intervention and collaboration to create safer, more sustainable working environments.
