Families across New South Wales are set to benefit from a major healthcare upgrade following the official opening of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead’s new 14-storey Paediatric Services Building. The Minns Labor Government said the expansion will improve access to specialised treatment, surgery and intensive care for children closer to home.

The new facility forms the centrepiece of the hospital’s $659.1 million Stage 2 Redevelopment and brings critical healthcare services together under one roof. The project aims to streamline treatment for children and young people from across the state while improving support for families during difficult medical situations.

The building includes expanded surgical facilities, additional operating theatres, specialist cardiology and radiology labs, as well as dedicated neonatal and paediatric intensive care units across two floors. Cancer treatment services have also been upgraded with a new oncology treatment centre and expanded inpatient facilities.

One of the standout additions is the upgraded pharmacy equipped with robotic technology capable of automatically dispensing medication. The facility also includes the statewide burns service, helping strengthen Westmead’s position as one of Australia’s leading paediatric healthcare centres.

Government officials said the building was designed in consultation with patients, families and healthcare staff to create a more welcoming environment. Bright and home-like spaces were included throughout the hospital to improve wellbeing and help reduce stress for children receiving treatment.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said families simply want high-quality healthcare close to home when their children become seriously ill. He said the investment delivers more operating theatres, increased intensive care capacity and modern facilities designed to support Western Sydney’s rapidly growing population.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Western Sydney Prue Car described the project as a major investment in Western Sydney’s future. She said the new facility ensures families no longer need to travel far from their communities to access world-class paediatric healthcare and specialist treatment services.

The completion of the redevelopment further strengthens the Westmead Health Precinct, now recognised as one of the world’s largest health, research and education hubs. With additional hospital projects planned across NSW, the Minns Government says it remains focused on expanding healthcare infrastructure for growing communities.
