Liverpool City Council has elected Councillor Sam Karnib as Deputy Mayor, marking a significant milestone for his family and continuing a legacy of public service established by his late father, former Councillor and Deputy Mayor Ali Karnib.

Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun congratulated Councillor Karnib on his election, expressing his enthusiasm for working with the newly elected Deputy Mayor to serve the city’s residents.
“I congratulate newly elected Deputy Mayor and look forward to working with him to keep serving the residents of Liverpool,” Mayor Mannoun said.
Honouring a Legacy of Community Service
The late Ali Karnib dedicated more than two decades to serving the Liverpool community. During his time in local government, he served as Deputy Mayor on three occasions and became known for his commitment to education, multicultural harmony and creating opportunities for people from all backgrounds.
He championed the belief that everyone should have the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background, and that strong communities are built by bringing people together. His contributions were further recognised in 2026 when he was included on the NSW Multicultural Honour Roll.
For Sam Karnib, his election represents an opportunity to continue the values his father championed throughout his years of public service.
“I am honoured to have been elected Deputy Mayor and to have the opportunity to serve the people of Liverpool in the same way my father did,” Councillor Karnib said.
He reflected on his father’s dedication to the community and his commitment to education, opportunity and bringing people together.
“To follow in his footsteps is a great privilege. I know the responsibility that comes with this role, and I will do my best to represent our residents, listen to their concerns and help deliver a better future for our city,” he said.
A Strong Connection to Liverpool
Born and raised in Liverpool, Sam Karnib attended local schools before studying law and business at Western Sydney University. He is now a Principal Solicitor at a law firm based in Liverpool.
First elected to Liverpool City Council in 2024, Councillor Karnib brings his professional experience and longstanding connection to the city to his new leadership role.
His election as Deputy Mayor marks a new chapter in the Karnib family’s longstanding association with local government. As Liverpool continues to grow and evolve as a diverse community, Sam Karnib will work to represent residents, address their concerns and support the city’s future aspirations while carrying forward his father’s legacy of service.
