Parramatta locals and visitors are set to step back in time as Heritage Day at Parramatta North 2026 returns on Saturday, 9 May, offering a vibrant celebration of history, culture and community.

Hosted within the historic Parramatta North Cultural Precinct, the family-friendly event will run from 9am to 3pm, featuring free guided tours, live entertainment, cultural performances, historical talks, market stalls and activities for all ages.
A Day of History, Reflection and Community
The official program begins at 10am with a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony led by the Jannawi Dance Clan, acknowledging the Burramada people of the Dharug Nation as the Traditional Custodians of the land.


The event offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore one of Australia’s most historically significant precincts while engaging with stories that have shaped Parramatta and the nation.
Historic Tours Take Centre Stage
A major highlight of the day will be guided walking tours through the heritage-listed Parramatta Girls’ Home and Parramatta Female Factory.
These tours will uncover the layered histories of the site and the many lives connected to it, offering visitors a deeper understanding of Australia’s social welfare and institutional history.



In the afternoon, respected historian Judith Dunn OAM will present a historical talk titled “Unknown Women Pioneers,” shedding light on stories often overlooked in mainstream historical narratives.
Family-Friendly Attractions
Heritage Day also promises plenty of entertainment for families, with free children’s activities including a petting zoo, face painting, lawn games and creative craft sessions.

A curated marketplace will showcase handmade goods, thoughtful gifts and local products – offering ideal Mother’s Day shopping opportunities ahead of the annual celebration.
Part of Australia’s Largest Heritage Celebration
The event forms part of the 2026 Australian Heritage Festival, coordinated nationally by the National Trust of Australia.
Running from 18 April to 18 May, the festival is the country’s largest community-driven heritage event and this year embraces the theme “Change.”

The theme encourages communities to reflect on evolving cultural narratives, reinterpret shared histories and consider how heritage can shape the future.
Easy Access to a Nationally Significant Precinct
Heritage Day is hosted by Property and Development NSW in partnership with Place Management NSW.
With the Ngara Light Rail stop located directly at the precinct, accessing the event has become more convenient than ever.

Parramatta North has held a place on the Australian National Heritage List since 2018, recognised for its outstanding contribution to Australia’s social welfare history.

Donna Davis said the event offers the community a valuable opportunity to connect with Parramatta’s historical significance through engaging and family-friendly experiences.’

Meanwhile, Steve Kamper noted that Heritage Day reflects the ongoing revitalisation of Parramatta North, balancing preservation with new opportunities for discovery, reflection and cultural activation.
